You would think Hempstead Middle school principal Amy Lacey was asking to see the papers of the 50% Hispanic students at her school as this story is now getting national attention. But all she did was announce that students can not speak Spanish while in class to avoid disruption. The students make it sound like horrible discrimination and apparently the school district agrees. She has been placed on paid administrative leave and the school district is bending over backwards to apologize for the principals actions.
But some residents of Hempstead (outside of Houston) agree with the principal according to KHOU11:

The school district agrees with hamstringing these kids ability to function in society?
I don’t get it.
The kids need English immersion in order to learn in American schools. That should’ve happened during summer school.
We have a large Hispanic population locally, and two elementary schools are spending half the day in English & half in Spanish. Now the American students may end up being able to speak Spanish, but overall, I’ll bet they’ll be behind in all other studies. And the Hispanics will be equally behind.
This is a great step taken by the principal and should lead to the banning on speaking all languages that are not English in the schools and the principal should abolish all foreign language classes.
>> the school district is bending over backwards to apologize
Encouraging the Balkanization. Idiots.
Why abolish foreign languages? That seems a bit overboard ...
How ‘bout, German, Polish, Farsi, Ebonics etc?
The residents should hold a protest and keep their kids out of class one day and picket the school.
If they don’t like it, they, and their parents, can go back to their homeland.
This is America, our main language is English, quit being selfish and impacting the education of other students.
Notice how one of the students was pissed and said Spanish was her first language?
The principal sees the necessity to ban students from speaking a foreign language in the school and understands that we are an English speaking nation. Since we are an Englsih speaking nation, foreign languages should not be spoken on our schools and her rule will provide a valid reason to cease the teaching of foreign languages in our schools.
Are you by chance British. Those blokes are said to be very good at understatement.
Are are you just being kind?
Noob statements like that make F.R. look bad. Is that your point?
“while in class to avoid disruption”...how is that overboard?
Heck, they toss pills down kids throats to shut them up so as to not disrupt class!
Our national policy should be English Only in the public realm. If we were to adopt such a policy, it needs to include our public schools and that would include only English in the public schools.
It would also help legal immigrants to assimilate into our culture by prioritizing their need to learn English.
Did you or not advocate that foriegn languages not be taught in schools?
Allow me to answer my own rhetorical question. As a matter of fact, you did. There’s no way to give you the benefit of the doubt or to sugar coat it, that’s just stupid.
You live here, speak english.
How much of my tax dollars are wasted to accommodate these kids, who for the most part will never graduate or barely pass?
How much money does the state pay to maintain 2 sets of documents, one english and one spanish?
How heavily impacted are tests scores?
SPEAK FREAKING ENGLISH OR GO BACK TO MEXICO
I've never been accused of that in the past ...
