I'm not sure who said it, but in the 60s the GOP opposed medicaid and medicare, then they spent the next 50 years trying to fix it and fund it. This is what we're looking at.

I’ve been GOP and now GOPe my whole life. And, there is about 50% truth in this comment.
The GOP is mainly a party that are center right which means not all that conservative but even more than that, we have been the resume party. Our candidates had to have a decent resume, have an adult viewpoint on life and the third qualification was to restrain and/or limit govt.
Reagan did not reduce govt., he reduced the rate of growth. Oh and he also had a decent resume and was an adult as opposed to the children who run as democrats.
Bush was the same except he increased taxes, but had a great resume, and was an adult.
