You will find out if you are part of a militia, if you get forced to put on a uniform and serve.

Absolutely it was servitude. You were a private, you obeyed orders. If you didn’t show up with all the right gear you could be fined or worse. I know enough of my own family history to figure this - I’ve read their Revolutionary War pension records. A militia is not a bunch of drunks with guns.
