It's hard to see how one would motivate other countries to do the same without some sort of negotiated agreement.

How about "don't do business with them?"

Not doing business with a foreign country would be the same as imposing a trade restriction on them. The article and some of the posters were encouraging the unilateral dropping of all trade restrictions.

Also, in order to "not do business" with a foreign country, you have to get all businesses on our side to abide by this policy. What is going to stop individual businesses from importing cheap goods from a foreign country, even when that country has high tariffs that restrict our exports?
