Police admitted that the fatal shooting of a mental patient armed with scissors could have been prevented if the road sergeant equipped with a Taser had been at the scene in time.
Michael Eligon, 29, was walking toward police with the weapon and a blank stare when he was shot three times by an officer in Toronto, an inquest heard.
A chilling video of the dramatic shooting shown to the inquest captured Mr Eligons last moments as he walked toward police who had their guns drawn and yelled drop it on February 3 last year.
Under cross examination, Constable Scott Walker told the inquest that a Taser would have been a lest lethal option of subduing Mr Eligon but that the sergeant carrying one was not on the scene at the time, according to the Toronto Sun.
Mr Eligon had escaped from Toronto East General Hospital, where he was being treated for depression, earlier that day wearing just socks and his hospital gown.
The police hunt for Mr Eligon began after he stole two pairs of scissors from a convenience store, stabbing the attendant in the hand as he tried to stop the escapee....
Police finally found him wandering down Milverton Boulevard in East York and surrounded him with guns drawn....
Unperturbed, Mr Eligon continues towards police, who back away until one officer backs into a parked car.
As Mr Eligon advances to within four to six feet of the policemen, Constable Andrew Boyd screamed shoot him and one officer obliges, firing three shots. Mr Eligon crumples to the ground....

Someone needs to take a scissors to that headline -- if they dare.
To protect & serve.
hmmm...
That would certainly eliminate all the cut-outs, cut-ups, and cut-ins in school.
I thought the exact same thing ! Many ways to disarm the poor guy, why the hell shoot him.
Personally, I don’t expect the police to take a stabbing. You can stab someone in the neck and kill them.
Beat me to it- that was a headline?
You can also bite someone in the neck and kill him.
If over a half dozen constables can’t disarm a lone mental patient carrying only a pair if scissors, then Toronto is in deep trouble.
Wild-eyed nutcase coming at me with scissors? A nutcase who has already stabbed someone? I’d certainly be putting a bullet in his brain, so I’m hardly going to complain about some cop doing it.
According to the headline, he was already dead.
I guess “depression” is the PC term for “bat-shit crazy” these days.
Really? Three cops (presumably with clubs) couldn’t take down one guy with scissors?
OTOH, I suppose someone could have recorded the last 30 seconds of the “police beating down a mental patient” ala Rodney King. Much safer just to shoot him.
“If the police would have not gotten this guy and the person went after some innocent person who with a scissors, then what?”
If you actually believe that, I feel very sorry for you!
wow, and he wasn’t even running
They got to go home to their families and tell them that they shot a mental patient who was carrying scissors.
“I was really scared. I couldn’t move out of the way. Killing him was the only option. I feel better now knowing that he is dead and I’m not. I was able to come home to my family. Aren’t you glad?”
Night sticks are what got the LAPD in trouble over Rodney King.
No one was going to get a net over that tall mass of prison muscle, but people forget that the highway patrolwoman was getting ready to shoot him, as her highway patrol partner and husband watched, when the LAPD intervened and probably saved his life.
Must be the ‘Brit’ English interfering with their ‘English’ journalism (dialects ;^D)

Must be.. we need to arm up, start landing sandbags, and get ready!
Like JPG said.. must be zombies >.< ;)
