He must have made the corrections in cursive. The dumbing down of students has succeeded all the way up to Graduate School.

Two things:

1. I would bet that the "Graduate School of Education & Information Studies" is already one of the most left-wing, pro-"diversity" parts of UCLA, and that is saying something. So that the demonstration occurs here is instructive.

2. Language evolves like a lot of social institutions, so I don't mind acknowledging new usage patterns, such as this one. But every term I teach a first-year writing-intensive course, and about 20% of my students simply cannot write an intelligent paragraph. One reads it and has no idea what was meant. The problems do not just involve grammatical rules, although those are legion, but seemingly randomly chosen words and word sequences. It simply has to be read to be believed, and I was shocked when I first started teaching that one could graduate high school writing like that. Some of these graduate students probably fall into this category. I am irritated to have to be the bearer of the bad news that some people just cannot use the English language well enough to get a college degree, but have to because those are the students I am presented with.

Students in an Education Department protesting grammar and punctuation corrections. I kept hoping to see this was satire but it’s real life. Higher education has become a parody of itself.

Nah, it’s UCLA. It’s the armpit of Socal unis. When the school tries it’s best to hire traitorous commie toad Janut Nuttylitano to one of the school’s posts, you know campus is rife with the “hate whitey lick obama’s ass” crowd.

These grammar corrections were made on their dissertations!

In the old days the poor students would just try to plagiarize their dissertations.

Parading around with a placard somewhere and chanting mindless slogans is a lot easier then sitting down and learning correct grammar and punctuation.

And taxpayers are paying for their education through Pell grants and education loans that will probably never be repaid.

I know my grammar isn't perfect. In my open concept experimental school education (This is the foundation for Common Core) I was never taught grammar, spelling and punctuation, ever. We focused more on Literature, recycling and global cooling. No rote memory just process and feelings. However, since I have a proper understanding of theory, rhetoric and logic, that helped me quite a bit in College.

Anyway, these people are the result of a piss poor education system

And these college graduates wonder why they do not get hired.

The contractor I work with speaks Spanish as a second language, just as I do-but we won’t hire even a laborer for who isn’t an American citizen and who can’t speak proper, conversational English, period, no exceptions. Apparently, some college grads from California would not get hired as even unskilled labor where I work...

Sadly, most students graduating from high schools are not prepared to do college work. This information came from a president of a local university.

Colleges, not only junior colleges, are having to provide 'dumb-bell' courses at the students expense to bring them up to speed so they can do 'what used to be college entry level work'.

... students in the demonstration described grammar and spelling corrections he made on their dissertation proposals as a form of "micro-aggression."

That's just weird.

I read the article in the "Bruin". My take is the students got lazy in their dissertation proposal. The professor was emphasizing citations and grammar because, well, he's the professor. Citations are important and should be correct.

Anyway, the students got lazy, got caught and then played the racial card as smoke and mirrors so their original laziness was now not the issue.

Excuse me, micro-aggression?

A lot of his former students are defending the professor.
