A bitterly divided Senate voted Thursday to ease the confirmation process for most presidential nominees, a momentous and potentially risky step that limits the ability of Republicans to block President Barack Obama's choices for executive-branch and most judicial posts.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) engineered the rules change, over Republican objections, with a complicated parliamentary maneuver that ended up placing new curbs on the use of the filibustera move so controversial that it is often called the "nuclear option."
"The American people believe Congress is broken. The American people believe the Senate is broken It's time to change the Senate before this institution becomes obsolete," Mr. Reid said.
The key vote was 52-48, with all but three Democrats voting for the change and all Republicans opposed. Democratic Sens. Carl Levin of Michigan, Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Joe Manchin of West Virginia broke from their party and voted against changing the rules.

I have been saying the exact, almost verbatim things for a year now.
I've felt for a long time that the Democrats are playing their end game. They are seeking to push the conservative opposition into permanent minority status. I believe they do not think they will lose the White House or Senate again and will keep chipping away at the House.
We should know by now that GOP plays by Marquess of Queensberry fight rules while the rats play by street fight rules.
I would get judges in that would...close the border and deport illegals, uphold banning... abortion, queer marriage, queers in the military, all gun control, and 18 yr olds voting.
Put in place national photo ID voting laws, and on and on.
The bastards would rue the day Hairy Reed changed the rules!
yep What I think about most of those elected, is that they really won’t be affected by all the garbage being put in place by this Administration. In the end, a la my two Senators, McShamnesty (whom I did not vote for in the Repub primary. I voted for JD Hayworth) and McFlake don’t really care about their constituents. They both are wealthy enough, and have enough power, they will be fine. It’s the rest of us that won’t be fine and are being destroyed.
Somehow the term “Bi-partisan opposition” didn’t appear in this article. Weird, right?
They should research what happened to a certain king who thought he could rule with an iron fist.
Just keep pushing us and they will find out.
The House Committee on Un-American Activities continued on after Sen. Joe McCarthy was shown the door. In the 1960s, militant Communists went on the march against HCUA and ultimately won out. They hold the chair positions in academia, media, and government now.
Just because the struck pig squeals doesn’t mean that you have to show mercy against the treasonous enemy.
That means extra ammunition for the winnable 2014 Senate races against Landrieu (LA), Begich (AK), Hagan (NC), Warner (VA), Udall (CO), Harkin (IA) and Udall (NM) ... to name a few.
Their opponents should bash them continuously over this vote to piss on the Constitution.
An empty boast, as this applies to nominees for judges and other bureaucratic posts.
To me this is a pretty clear indication of where the Dems feel they are in the process of converting our Republic into a Socialist State. They’d have never instituted this rule change if they thought the Republicans would EVER get to use it in the future. They are confident in their ability to steal elections at all levels and are certain they will now remain in power indefinitely. Exercising the nuclear option is evidence of that confidence. Watch for a flood of federal judicial appointments. I suspect we are now done.
They plan on cheatin’, if you complain you will called a racist.
They are not trading anything. The Democrats will get their way now and when the roles are reversed in the future, they will get their media lapdogs to pressure the Republicans into caving. As always, it’s a pay me now and pay me later type of deal for the Democrats.
The rules change only applied to certain Judicial appointments. The real danger is that they set a precedent for changing the rules to a simple majority. Now, there are no rules that a simple majority can not change. We now have rule by the tyrannical majority.
I compressed your post for impact. What you have said is a clear eyed assessment of where we are. Where we are today is the road that lead to the rise of the German monster of the 1930ies. The US is riven through with leftists who will end the US as a free country and, solutions, if there are any, are outside of the system of government we have lived under.
Well, that might be good for stopping legislative bills, but the House has NO say in the nomination process, so it won't affect packing the executive and judicial branch with potentially despotic or partisan hacks.
The House must refuse to fund this presidential overreach, but I fear that the previous budget compromise of October 2013. If I understand correctly that compromise eliminated the Debt Ceiling unless Congress votes in February to restore it. Since the Republicans don't control the Senate, this won't happen barring exception circumstances. Consequently, in order to reestablish the debt ceiling in law, the Republicans need a 2/3 majority in both houses to override a presidential veto or a favorable president.
Not exactly. O'Keefe has got 'em reciting their go-to rule #17 on video:
Rule 17. Do whatever the F#)* it takes.
HF
Just another example why the Republican’s need to take the Senate in 2014. and then they need to grow some balls...and lead..not follow the leader..
Harry Reid is totally insane and should be forced to retire...but we know Democrats do not set examples for others, they do as they wish...DESTROY.
