You need more gun. A 44 Ruger super redhawk springs to mind. Mine is gone due to an unfortunate canoeing accident. I am from KY also.

Personally, I think the latter is a much better gun for self defense purposes.

The important thing is that it has to fit in my pocket. I figure most people staring down the barrel will not be wondering if it will just be a flesh wound.

Though I also believe that you don’t aim a gun at a person unless you plan on killing them.
