Cosell used the phrase "look at that little monkey run!" in 1973 in reference to a kickoff return by Redskins Herb Mul-Key. There was no backlash.

Ten years later, in 1983, he said "That little monkey gets loose, doesn't he?" in reference to Redskins wide receiver Alvin Garrett. The head of the SCLC demanded a public apology. Cosell refused, pointing out that he had used the phrase for small white athletes as well.

Cosell 'retired' from football after the 1983 season, saying he had lost interest in professional football.
