Last week, ABC 7′s I-Team produced a troubling report about a surge in extreme drinking so far this year at UC Berkeley. According to the investigation, UC Berkeley has seen an increase in the number of students who get so drunk, often at frat parties, that they need to be taken to the hospital for care.
This has, at times, put a significant burden on the citys ambulance services, leaving other city residents waiting for care, or requiring the Berkeley Fire Department to call for help from other paramedics in the region. It also puts pressure on the hospital closest to campus, Alta Bates

According to the Daily Cal, University of California police officers responded to nine reports of alcohol-related illness during move-in weekend alone. Most of those calls were to residence halls. Eight of those required ambulance trips to the emergency room.
Ive never seen eight in one night, UCPD Lt. Eric Tejada told the Daily Cal. We get one to three on a weekend, usually, at least in the first few weeks. To see eight in one night is pretty troubling....
UCPD officers are told not to cite students for drinking.

by who? Who has the power to override state laws? This is why campus police need to be abolished and a real police department open substations there.
One of my friends was an ER doc near one of the more notorious party schools in the UC system. The guys in his practice spent most of Friday and Saturday night pumping the stomachs of coeds. Needless to say, many parent would contest the bills their kids incurred because their little angel didn’t drink. They taking pictures in the ER and including them in the medical records. Most parents would immediately pay up.
Hell, with all that the “lyin’ king” is doing, I’m considering taking up drinking again. LOL!
Berkeley = liberals, what idiots they already start out with a deficit of brain cells and then they deliberately destroy more?
One has to be a heavy drinker to keep voting for commie DemocRATS.
What with this Obamacare disaster, no wonder they’re getting hammered! Probably looking ahead to 2014 as well /s;)
Getting drunk, getting high, it’s all in vogue now. It’s cool again. Tune in, turn on, drop out.
With that being said, why doesn't UCal have it's own ambulance service? I know the two major colleges around me — one with 20,000 students one with 8,000— both have their own EMS.
Binge drinking Kool Aid at Berkeley is nothing new... I am tellin ya... that red food dye is no good... and it’s just sugar water to boot!
How can that be? Just how much does this student drink?
When I was at Cal many years ago in the engineering school.
we all had no time for any thing but study. All of us had to
give every thing we had to make it. Majority was Indian , Chinese, California Chinese, Taiwanese, etc. It was all business in the engineering corner of the campus. I think it
is probably still the same there. You can’t make it there and party too.
Mercy Hospital Pittsburgh Pa about 5 yrs ago. St Patrick’s Day. My sister had fallen down the steps and broken her shoulder, she has never had a drink. I was there, sober, with my other sister who has also never had a drink in her life. The ER was packed with drunken /high medacaid and college kids. There was a dead coed laying on gurney in the hall being ignored. I pulled the blanket up over her face and we said a prayer for her.j
I went to a state school in NJ; it was in an urban toilet with no party scene. I liked it because the students were there to learn; if they wanted to party they went to another campus. The environment lent itself to motivating you to study (in order to avoid those environments in the future).
I am sure your diligence paid off
The reason for not citing students for drinking is to make sure that, when someone is in need of medical attention, there’s no resistance to avoid someone getting into trouble.
I get your point, but the reality of the situation is, it probably saves lives.
99% of the time the students have no need of medical attention, these pervert campuses simply do not enforce the law, they pick and choose which laws they enforce like Obama and Holder.
Oh please., that is the worst justification ever. Let people break the law because 1% of 1% might someday need medical attention. ridiculous
