Talks in Geneva between world powers and Iran ended late Saturday night without a deal, after hitting a snag earlier in the day when France questioned the terms of a proposed agreement.
Chances of bridging all differences appeared to diminish as the day went on, but efforts continued. The foreign ministers of the seven delegations discussing Iran held a last-ditch meeting late Saturday, and were later joined by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, in an apparent effort to salvage the talks.
Earlier Saturday, Zarif said talks would resume within seven to 10 days, if an agreement would not be reached. Zarif held a reported five-hour trilateral meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton over the contents of a draft agreement.
The Iranian foreign minister also held meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ashton in efforts to reach an agreement, after which Lavrov and Kerry also met.
Israel lobbied hard against the deal on Saturday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz reported to have spoken to representatives of some of the P5+1 nations. US President Barack Obama called Netanyahu on Friday after the prime minister publicly castigated the emerging deal as very, very bad and dangerous and said he had pleaded with Kerry not to sign it. Netanyahu also spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Iran and the six world powers were split on the terms of a nuclear deal because the French were holding out for tougher conditions, a Western diplomat said.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Tehran was resisting demands that it suspend work on a plutonium-producing reactor and downgrade its stockpile of higher-enriched uranium to a level that cannot quickly be turned into the core of an atomic bomb.

Oh my god, color me shocked!!!
I am gobsmacked, surprised, surprised, surprised!
Farking idiots, imbeciles, maroons, and that means
you, baraak Obamo, and you too, john F’n Kerry.
I’m verklempt at the stupidity what is supposedly
running our country. (right into the ground!).
Baaaaaaah, a pox on the lot of them, commie bastages.
How long until zero agrees to refurbish the reactor at U.S. taxpayer expense on the “promise” that Iran won’t do anything “naughty” ala Madelaine Albright and the “agreement” with the Norks?
GOOD! Bastards Kerry and Obama were trying to sell out Israel until France stood up for them. Viva la France!
Europe now understands that the U.S. under Barack Obama will not destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities. So, if the Europeans want a nuclear-free Iran, they have no choice but to support Israel. Yet the only European country willing to support Israel is France.
Well, they helped out at Yorktown, too. Once every couple hundred years is about right.
Next meeting has been scheduled for November 20 but without foreign ministers there.
Foreign ministers from all countries were in attendance today.
Iran should have been invaded, occupied and denazified to begin with. Iraq was a useless distraction to keep freight fuel prices down. All political speech is lies. For me, Israel as an ally is more important than the price of oil and international debt...er, trade.
Not just at Yorktown, but throughout the Revolutionary War. France & Britain were at war elsewhere also, and it was more a way to advance their own war against Britain than a real love of the U.S. But we got our freedom with their help and we should be grateful for that.
The One must go to Geneva and give a speech.
I guess the Frenchies were too smart to “approve to find out what’s in it.”
Finally! Peace in our time! < /S >
