Oh you crazy FReepers. This story is a spoof. She had a restraining order; therefore, none of this could have happened! She had a piece of paper to protect her!

Do I need a sarc tag?

A Louisiana family decided to take justice into their own hands on Friday

Note how the New York media wrongly describes what happened. "Taking justice into their own hands" suggests some kind of vigilante action, when what they did was simply search for and rescue a young woman who was kidnapped, and obviously in immediate danger.

Every able citizen should be ready and willing to search for and rescue missing people, and any citizen who rescues somebody from a violent crime in progress should be celebrated for their actions.

Given what is known of the facts of this case so far deadly force was used to stop an attempted murder during a kidnapping, and I don't think there is any jurisdiction in the nation where that would be anything other than a legal, and in this case it appears, heroic act.

A restraining order is great. I have 2 friends with crazy exes. Both of them are smart though, as they back those orders up with firearms. The restraining order just makes jail time less likely when someone needs shooting.

It has French origins but as an adopted southern I can attest it is all American now.
God bless this family for doing what is right. Waiting for the cops in this circumstance is never right. Sadly the perp died in the commission of a felony. I doubt SWAT would have treated him differently.
My father once rescued me from a butt whooping, and years later rescued mt step sister from a crack dealer’s lair. Brave man didn’t even have a gun.

Ha! I didn’t notice that. Freakin’ New York, is it any wonder they just voted for a hardcore commie like Bill de Blasio for Mayor? They didn’t learn their lesson with Obama and the absolute disaster commie politicians are, no they *had* to have one as Mayor as well. Freakin asshats.

I wonder which is correct?

The rescue by family was apparently over by the time the "SWAT team" arrived. Wouldn't be the first time a dead guy has held a SWAT team at bay for a while. Remember Andrew Cunanan? They took their time storming the houseboat in which he had holed up and killed himself.

Google map.

Making a case for French cowardice in the wars of the 20th century is ignorant of the facts

Making a case for French cowardice in any war is ignorant of the facts. Every time I see a French surrender joke, I just want to respond with one word:

Verdun

You are right. Some police who were also searching in the area arrived shortly after the victim was rescued. A description of the events is included in an article by the photographer who happened to be there. The surprise refers to her surprise when they rescue happened unexpectedly right in front of her. She and her colleague ran away from the gunfire, but did get pictures a short time later.
