Leaders of the Republican establishment, alarmed by the emergence of far-right and often unpredictable Tea Party candidates, are pushing their party to rethink how it chooses nominees and advocating changes they say would result in the selection of less extreme contenders.
The push comes as the national Republican Party is grappling with vexing divisions over its identity and image, and mainstream leaders complain that more ideologically-driven conservatives are damaging the party with tactics like the government shutdown.
The debate intensified on Wednesday after Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, the deeply conservative Republican candidate for governor of Virginia, lost a close race in which Democrats highlighted his opposition to abortion in almost all circumstances, his views on contraception and comments in which he seemed to liken immigration policy to pest control.
The party leaders pushing for changes want to replace state caucuses and conventions, like the one that nominated Mr. Cuccinelli, with a more open primary system that they believe will draw a broader cross-section of Republicans and produce more moderate candidates.

Yours is obviously practicing insanity and sticking your head up the GOP's arse thinking that is the only way salvation comes.
The GOPe really wants to have a civil war.
fine
We may have to destroy the Republican Party to save it.
No. The GOPe considers Conservatives ‘the enemy’ to their power - same as the MarxoFascists and Democrats.
They do not want a war - they want an elimination. They want Conservatism to be rendered criminal, obsolete and irrelevant. This is why they will serve as Judenrats for the Left, and help the Left eliminate Conservatives.
They share the same hatred for us that the Leftist Democrats do. They want us gone. Criminalizing the Tea Party and Conservatism is as amenable to them as it is to Obama.
There is no possible way to reform D.C. via elections or the party process anymore. We’ve been fundamentally transformed.
Most simply do not realize it yet.
You don’t have a solution.
Not one that would interest you.
You’re too busy practicing insanity.
The plan...dammit.
At the risk of tossing pearls here, one ‘plan’ (of several) that completely circumvents D.C., is one Mark Levin wrote about and has been discussing at length.
He even stated last week there is NO CHANCE to reform Washington from within the national parties. NONE. While his Article V idea has merit, I fear it too little too late to stop what has been set in motion by the MarxoFascists.
His is just one of several ideas that are percolating among Conservatives.
I simply recognize that any action and effort undertaken to unseat those who now rule us, and to reign-in the Federal Beast will result in violence should those efforts threaten their hold on power. You cannot remain civil among the uncivil. We’re dealing with a political Mafia here. They are not going to give up their power by any civil means no matter what We The People do. Thats history and human nature talking.
They are going to destroy anyone and any effort mounted to restore the Constitutional Republic, by force if necessary. Fact of history.
Bottom line - ANY effort to stop D.C. is going to require acting from OUTSIDE the institutions they have corrupted for themselves. They no longer serve liberty, the Republic or the people. They are made to serve those in power only.
Well, other than this, that was almost a civil post (yeah you're a pig too)
Regarding Mark Levin's The Liberty Amendments...if it is from the Constitution, it's not really outside the system is it?
It's simply "We the People" acting outside the power of the three branches of the federal government, but still exercising a power or right relegated to the states.
Levin's concept is brilliant, and in fact it seems at least one state has begun to get the ball rolling.
You could have said this in the first place without being a belligerent and vulgar dirtbag.
Coming from someone who decidedly compared my comments to domestic terrorist McVeigh - I think you sir, are the epitome of what it means to be a belligerent vulgar dirtbag.
Regarding Mark Levin's The Liberty Amendments...if it is from the Constitution, it's not really outside the system is it?
So again, you illustrate that your reading comprehension skills are like those of most liberals: non-existent.
I said repeatedly that the 'system' that the Ruling Class has corrupted is not able to be reformed, and that stopping the thugs in D.C. requires we act from OUTSIDE THE SYSTEMS AND INSTITUTIONS THEY HAVE CORRUPTED. That means we cannot take over political parties from within, influence the courts, or get the federal Beast off our backs via elections.
Constitutional restoration will have to be FORCED upon them, because tyrants do not relinquish power by any civil means. That means arresting this tyranny is going to have to come from OUTSIDE the usual channels of the last 150 years.
Levin has provided ONE possible plan. What his book does NOT discuss at any length or detail - is the efforts the Ruling Class are going to make to STOP an Article V convention from being a threat to their power.
The OP in this thread is just one such effort. The Ruling Class has decided We The Little People cannot be trusted to pick our Representatives - so they are going to pick our 'representatives' for us.
That's just one of many efforts now underway to marginalize and limit the Conservative movement. Rules and laws will be changed to ensure insulation of the Ruling Class from any efforts to dethrone them. If the threat does indeed manifest itself enough to concern TPTB, efforts, groups and individuals will be attacked and destroyed - by every and all means at their disposal.
Thats simple fact.
