SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) — Sheriff's officials say the Northern California deputy who fatally shot a 13-year-old boy is a firearms instructor who has trained his law enforcement colleagues in the proper use of force for nearly two decades.

Sonoma County spokesman Assistant Sheriff Lorenzo Duenas said 48-year-old Erick Gelhaus has been an instructor and rangemaster for the county for 19 years.

He also teaches pistol, carbine, shotgun and rifle lessons for Gunsite, a private company in Arizona, according to the company's Web site.

Gelhaus, a 24-year sheriff's office veteran, is a frequent contributor to S.W.A.T. magazine, a monthly firearms publication.

Duenas confirmed that Gelhaus is one of 26 gun instructors for Sonoma County.

He has not only given shooting lessons but also has provided instruction on the proper use of force, Duenas said.

To do that job, "you've got to be good at instructing others," Duenas said, adding: "You have to be able to instruct others on policy and procedures and use-of-force policy issues."

Gelhaus shot and killed Andy Lopez last week in Santa Rosa.

Investigators say Gelhaus mistook the pellet gun Lopez was carrying for an assault rifle....

Spent years teaching others how to shoot people and get away with it.

All it takes is a little rote memory- just remember to say to the next person on the scene, "I felt threatened." No more training than that is necessary. The shot person can be an armless CP in a wheelchair. Just say, "I felt threatened."

If you are going to shoot a citizen you have to make sure he is dead, especially if there are no witnesses. It reduces the lawsuits somewhat.

I feel sorry for the trainee cop. He saw it all and knows what happened. He’s probably under pressure to recount the events in a way that protects his partner, the shooter.

Unfortunately for him he put too many rounds in his target and didn’t have enough left for the witnesses.

This guy’s “nice gene” postings may haunt him. But, he’ll probably get away with it. In this life.

The barrel looks black to me (as if that makes any difference) and I don’t see an air tube. Point that at me and I’ll shoot you.

Good point! He's the new guy. If he tells the truth, he might get accident prone.

So long as the militarized cops feel justified in anything they do and any person they shoot, such tragedies will continue to occur.

And will increase in frequency and egregiousness. This is the beginning of The Terror, not the antipopulation warfare of our enemies but classical State sponsored Terror directed by the State against its own population to keep the people numb and off balance, unable to create an opposition because no one trusts anyone else at all or even dares to think. The Federal Government is not engaged directly in The Terror but is sponsoring local police forces to warm it up. The Feds will get into it later with some sort of FEMA secret police.

No offense, but I am a former licensed gun dealer/ Class 3 SOT/20 year gun collector specializing in military-style firearms, and there is nothing readily visible about that gun that indicates with any level of certainty that it’s not real.

Show me a picture of an AK that looks like the one on the ground — shortened silver barrel air tube and all — that part of the gun that he said he saw pointing at him.

I won’t hold my breath.

Where do I find something that looks like that — shortened silver barrel with air tube.

shortened silver barrel air tube

lulz, wut?!

You don't know what you're talking about.

There's no silver barrel; you're looking at the bolt carrier through the ejection port. Bolt carriers on AKs are left "in the white" and look "silver."

The "air (gas) tube" is the shorter "second barrel" on top. It has not been shortened.

The barrel has, like I said, to get rid of the orange tip.

You don't think anyone, including any criminals have ever cut down an AK barrel? That's idiotic.

Please, don't try to sound smart when you are talking out of your ass.

Do an image search on “AK-47 stock” and you will find a hundred variations of stocks and there are lots of aftermarket barrels for them too.

Daily Mail article shows police chief holding them both up.

They have different looking barrels.

Why couldn’t he find two identical guns???

I have never seen an AK anything with that kind of barrel and if there was one the police chief would be holding it up instead of the one he is showing.

Ignore the Import Ban thumbhole stock.

The kid's barrel was cut right ahead of the gas block, right near the front sling swivel.

Put your finger over this picture to cover the muzzle end of the barrel, and you have something that looks exactly like the gun on the ground.

But this one will kill you.

All that's needed to accomplish that is a hack saw and file.

LOL, I bet I wouldn’t be too impressed by what you’ve seen, when it comes to firearms.
