Betsy McCaughey: Obamacare was designed to push many people into Medicaid…

I was reminded of this interview when I saw this tweet by Daniel Horowitz:

Now that the results of enrollment are coming in, it is quite clear that obamacare is medicaid 10:52 PM - 26 Oct 2013

Betsy McCaughey would agree, as she was on with Megyn Kelly last night to discuss the fact that Obamacare was designed to push people into Medicaid. Why? Because is a single payer system and that’s what they believe in, McCaughey said.

Starting Jan 1, 2014, I believe the asset tests for Medicaid will no longer be required.

A loophole big enough to drive a truck through. Pay off your house, quit your job and go on the dole. Or deed your house to an heir in return for a lifetime lease at $1 per month . . . Wow!

It wasn’t ‘tied to’, it was because of wage freezes.

You sound like Pelosi: ‘we have got to de-couple jobs from insurance.’

I was a MediCal eligibility worker many years ago. You are correct. You can have your house........if you live in it. Back then you could only have $2500 in cash, no clue what it is now. And any income beyond a certain point was used against you as a ‘share of cost’. They use a formula.....allows so much for housing, utilities, and support such as food etc. anything over and above that is to be used for medical costs.

Basically I see this making the red states redder and the blue states bluer. Those states that don't have basically opted out of their own exchanges don't have to expand medicaid and don't offer the subsidies. Those who are inclined to take a free ride on things might well be inclined to head from red states to blue. Those who want lower state taxes and such would look towards the red states. Could make for an interesting demographic shift.

Even Pelosi can be correct on rare occasions.

Anything that decouples the user from the cost is bad policy.

Medical costs went asymptotic as healthcare became so deeply tied to employment.

"Affordable Care Act of 2010. Estate recovery will be forced on millions of people who might have otherwise gone without insurance. Why? Because the plan is that millions more Americans have health insurance. That would be accomplished by expanding Medicaid and implementing premium assistance (subsidies). When a person is found to be eligible for Medicaid, they will be automatically enrolled into their state's Medicaid program. Those forced into Medicaid will, due to the federal law, also be forced into estate recovery. Their estates will be partly or fully taken over by the federal or state government when they die."

The Feds will have to stand in line. Tennessee has been during this for awhile now. As our elderly die due to aging and illness, drained of all their savings, many have to file for TnCare to supplement their Medicare. Their savings have been depleted, all that's left is granny's home which the State takes. If survivor's try to sell the homeplace after the patient's death to pay bills, the State intervenes and takes the proceeds. Happened to the lady who lives across the road from me. Doesn't matter whether there is a will or if the estate is probated. TNCare confiscates the proceeds. The State gets their's first. All other debtors are out of luck. AND, the State has to okay the sell. You can't sell it to Bubba for $10.00 or the State will not allow the sell to go through.

Of course!! Why it is so “successful” in Kentucky and why Kentucky has a governor promoting how “successful” Kentucky is in having more of its population on Medicaid than any other state!! Whoo hoooo!

it is also to make insurers and providers tow the line and not make so much. I still am very surprised Darrell ISsa’s bill is getting no press. it is a great idea to use the federal employees plan as a basis for providing insurance to all Americans. I can imagine how it could be tweaked to make it possible to cover Medicare people and maybe even Medicaid. if we did that, then maybe we could downsize CMS and get out of the healthcare administration business.

From memory.....

ObamaCare makes everyone at the poverty income level eligible for Medicaid.

In the past, for most states, Medicaid was available only for children, pregnant women, and people on SSI.

I'm not sure “forced” is the right word here.

Medicaid is free, and includes dental care.

Most really poor people are thrilled to get on it.

In fact, I suspect most low information voters thought that ObamaCare was going to be free.

When low income people discover they will have to PAY a monthly premium, plus PAY their deductible (up to $6,250), they are NOT going to do that!

Well yeah. That was obvious when Obama dipped into Medicare for about a trillion to redistribute to welfare folks.

I believe you cannot have assets over a fixed amount to be on medicaid. If you want on this program, these assets must be divested.

Don't worry, they'll divest you of them soon enough, through increased taxes, fees and fines. It's all spelled out in the thousands of new regulations in Obamacare.

"There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws." - Ayn Rand

I have a home listed in that precise category. The owner was on Medicaid and died while living in the home. The estate is trying to sell, but the executrix told me that she was informed that proceeds up to the amount spent on her mom will be claimed by the state. They also told her that SHE IS PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY SHORTAGE!

Talk about effectively gutting the next generation's wealth, without even trying!

I thought it was "only" about 700 billion!

Obamacare changed that. There is no longer an asset test for Medicaid. You can be a millionaire and get on it if you have low enough income.

As far as the government taking your assets after you die to compensate for Medicaid, I believe that is only if you are on Medicaid from age 55-64. I don’t think there’s any such penalty if you’re younger.
