If a shop asked me for ID for a cash purchase they’d lose the sale.

Oh yeah, just try going out and buying a new car for cash, like we did two weeks ago. You can’t, without going through a Federal “Red Flag” investigation that is basically running a credit check on you. You have to provide the dealer with your social security number and they have to refuse you the sale if you don’t. Another part of the Patriot Act. The dealer did say it cut down on Black guys in Ermine coats with bags of cash though! We were told “it was for our safety,” which didn’t make us feel one bit better.

My understanding is that he was using a debit card, in which case an ID would be appropriate.
Debit card, not cash.
Well, yeah. But in this case it was not cash. It was a debit card.
why are you bringing in a "cash sale" to this thread? There was nothing in the posting that said it was paid in cash...........
I gathered from the article that he used his debit card for the purchase. They usually don’t ask for ID for debit card use, but over a certain dollar amount some stores do. Getting the cops involved is really where they crossed the line.
Just because it is a debit card does not mean it was a cash sale. I shop at places where my debit card gets run through as credit and yes they ask me for ID when it does. Alot of stores do that because it is cheaper on them to run it as credit. Th amount still comes straight out of my account even though it shows as credit on their end.
Sorry, but a debit card is not cash.
