Many people smoke after they've eaten. Lindell Harvey smokes because he hasn't.

That isn’t what happened, at least in California, the businesses fought those laws.
Take out business did pick up in places that were predominantly eat in, and so that really hurt the wait staff. And in home catering picked up big time - at first. It fell off right after the holidays.
Granted I’m only speaking of where I lived at the time (2002, Dover DE) but the ban went into effect the night before Thanksgiving. Private parties in local restaurants were cancelled left and right-— some of which had been booked BEFORE the ban was even voted on. Places like the Elks, Moose, and VFW all got more private business party reservations than they could handle - because restaurants were no longer able to accommodate the clients that had booked the place to begin with.
I saw a guys big backyard tobacco plant in cool and foggy San Francisco. Tobacco grows in many places. It’s just that the prime growing areas are certain states.Tobacco plants are beautiful (I don’t smoke)
The local (read small) businesses have fought these laws in every state, but are out spent by the anti-smokers who are funded by the pharmaceutical industry and the chain restaurants who have take over all of the "local" restaurant associations.

That is correct...which is why I avoid places where people smoke as much as humanly possible. But what choice did I have as a child? Or when I entered the workplace and smokers were allowed to smoke at their desks? None.

You made the comment which you can’t back up with facts.
You failed.
We all have to tolerate others habits and behavior in the workplace. Some have to listen to the vilest vocabulary, others have to work with those who have poor personal health habits, drugs etc.... not to mention just plain mean and nasty people and or supervisors...... But if you cannot handle then you ‘still have the choice’ to change your job.
As for what your parents did...it was indeed their home to do as they pleased as with all parents....smoking isn’t the only bad influence on a child or what happens to children. But either or it’s never the childrens choice.
I just have a serious issue when people corner smoking when there are so many other issues equally as disturbing and as unsettling, in fact moreso.
Human nature does not change...there will always be “issues” with people wherever you are or go.
I will disagree fully with those who think smoking is simply for low lifers.....I know woman who are "closet" smokers because it's no longer considered socially acceptable. So they hide their habit as much as possible.
Smoking’s bad for you. Why not drink tea and sniff flowers, it would be just as pleasant and it would wear less on your health.
“There’s bad things in the world therefore we won’t care about trying to do better things” is not exactly the most air tight logic.
I am not kidding or joking... drink tea, sniff flowers.
Some actually enjoy smoking so you can’t say that’s any different then someone who cannot understand how people can guzzle beer or alcohol...or takes drugs...or overeats....it’s all ‘appetite’ of one form or another.....overindulging is harmful in all these areas.
I can’t categorically damn it across the board. The noted C. S. Lewis smoked for pleasure. My dad had the self control to smoke one cigarette a week, at his customary poker party. (That’s also the only time he’d have beer.) But it’s one of those things that can easily walk away with a life if not closely watched. American Indians smoked tobacco in their religious ceremonies and that kept it in a controlled context. When we Westerners smoke, we usually just smoke to smoke.
I.e. doing things as a ritual actually helps. If you can smoke unto the Lord, do it. But that also means you won’t be smoking a lot.
