SALT LAKE CITY - Can ranchers and farmers in Utah or other states spare a cow?

It's a question being asked at the Montana Farmers Union convention - and on social media - in an effort to get quality animals to beginning and small ranch operations in South Dakota hit by winter storm Atlas.

Growing up as the child of a herdsman (albeit one in a much milder clime), this situation hits near and dear. If any of you have contacts in the area that might be willing and able to help, please contact the folks at http://helpforsouthdakota.com/. Thanks.

Very sad reading about how the cows died by the storm,,,and so many of them died. They really suffered, and they didn’t even have their winter coats yet to protect them a little. And some ranchers lost everything. All their calves died, and the calves the cows were still carrying are gone. Some ranchers may never recover from that storm.

Freepers, note that you can make a cash donation if you don’t happen to have an extra cow on hand. ;-)

There is a link in the story.

I went to the donation site, and the person running it is with the USDA. How do we know the money will go to the ranchers and not to some government fund to be sent to DC?

If you would like to reach out directly to the ranchers, they have a Facebook page set up: https://www.facebook.com/RanchersRelief

They have alternate contacts on the About page there for possible donations.

I thought Conagra slaughtered something like 100,000 cattle every day.
