On the larger scale it is an iterative process. There’s more than one way to be rid of mediocrity (or, and this is actually preferable, force it to improve).

There is no force that would turn establishment Republicans into members of an effective opposition. Sometimes, the only way to improve a team is to get rid of mediocrity, accept short term losses, and build again. The Republican party will never be improved while hanging onto empty "R" seats. If they haven't done so in the last 5 years, they never will. That was Boswell's point, and that is even more true here.

Establishment Republicans won't change, and are incompatible with effective opposition. They have to go, even at the expense of (a misleading) R/D split in the senate and the house. I would be much more willing to have faith in the tooth fairy than I would to have faith in the capacity of the McCains of the world to change for the better.
