Is wearing make-up a 'betrayal'? One woman's dramatic transformation sparks online backlash
Daily Mail ^ | Friday, October 11, 2013 | Margot Peppers

A set of before and after photos that show the dramatic difference between a woman with and without make-up have sparked an internet debate about cosmetics.

Posted by make-up artist Melissa Murphy, the images, simply captioned: 'Make-up. That's it,' show a bare-faced woman with acne scars and shiny skin, and then her transformation after putting on make-up, with thicker eyebrows, flawless looking skin and a seemingly thinner face.

One person replied that a woman's personality counts more than her make-up routine, writing: 'You only feel "betrayed" because you put too much value on looks.'

In response to this accusation, plokoonismyfave pointed out the fact that a man who artificially altered his appearance would be seen in a negative light, too.

'If a guy wore prosthetic muscles under a long-sleeve shirt (à la Superman costumes), you would likely feel as if you had been deceived, regardless of what you thought of the person,' he wrote.

Disguise: One commenter pointed out: 'If a guy wore prosthetic muscles under a long-sleeve shirt, you would likely feel as if you had been deceived, regardless of what you thought of the person'

He then went on to accuse the woman in the photo of disguising her insecurities with cosmetics.

'The girl in the photo is apparently not satisfied with the way she looks without makeup,' he said, 'and uses makeup to artificially portray a person more people would find attractive.'

Others stayed out of the debate altogether, instead admiring the miraculous transformation made possible by the make-up artist, who also shares her work on Instagram.

'Holy crap! That's amazing,' wrote one fan of the make-over. 'I would've never been able to tell that those two pictures were the same person. If this is your work, you have an amazing talent!'

I wonder what the critical letter scrawlers’ attitudes are about lipstick, nail polish, leg and underarm hair, heels...

Yes.

And what they know but won’t tell us is what’s best for us anyhow.

Even an old barn looks a little better with some paint.

There you have it.

I'm not exactly sure what the revelation is here - that women generally look better with makeup? Well, duh!

Yep. And protect your assets.

The ones you can't hide, at least.

I applaud anything done by women or men that reduces an affront to my eyes.

So, you probably share my view that it’s not time to revive the codpiece?

“Yeah. Ain’t the same nose in both pics.”

Sure it is. One of the oldest make up tricks is using either blush, lipstick, liner pencil, and shading nostrils to visually reshape a nose. Same as with cheeks.

Exactly

Down south gals would find this discussion so stupid

I’m in Dallas right now..in a nice downtown hotel

Gorgeous women everywhere....most with make up....short hemlines and high heels....long hair and make up

God is so indeed great

He made em fine as grits and make up just enhances most....and buffers the years

Ain’t a damn thing wrong with it all

Why are so many women so pissed about it all....especially northern European descended

Italian and french and Latina and southern gals don’t seem so pissed off about not being taken serious enough

My scarlett O’Hara mama could take your head off without you ever even seeing the blade drop

Like it oughta be dammit y’all

Women...relish it baby

Slept with a girl once and she was amazingly beautiful.

Woke up in the morning and called the police get some trespasser out of my bed.

Couldn’t believe the difference without makeup.

Startling.

Saw her a few years later. She had two kids in tow(not mine) and started talking to me. She even knew my name.

I didn’t recognize her at all and she had to tell me who she was.

Thank Gawd nothing came of that relationship.

I’d probably have to gnaw off my arm every morning to sneak away.

Old Redd Foxx joke—paraphrased cuz I don’t remember it all:

“Other night, I bring home a beautiful woman from the bar up the street, take her to my bedroom. Start kissing her, pull her hair and it comes off in my hands. A wig!

So I toss it on the couch and start up again, cuz she still lookin’ alright. I grab her bre@sts, and her bra is full of foam. I take dat bra off and throw it on the couch. She’s still not too bad, so I grab her @ss and the girdle pops open! I take IT off and throw it on the couch too.

So I look at her again... and I look at the couch... And then I said “Aw, Hell, I’m just gonna f**k the couch!”

My apologies in advance, but that’s a great joke.

There has got to be a middle ground.

First off I think they should have used John Kerrey pictures of him before whatever proceedure he had done and then after.

Second, it is not just make up but the hair also is a major difference in the pictures. I think curling or cutting hair is ok. I think some make up is ok too, but the second picture has too much.

“I doubt any of these people have heard of Chinese foot binding.”

I doubt any Chinese under the age of 40 living in China have seen it or heard of it either. But then I can always count on virtually every thread on FR to have some stupid gratuitous anti Chinese comment.

They used simple tricks on her any woman can use----that made all the difference.

<><> Every good hairdresser knows where you part your hair makes a big difference--look at her off-center part. Hold a comb at a right angle to the tip of your eyebrow nearest your nose---and part it there.

<><> Buy a cheap white pencil---white out the lines around your nose--and the age line from nose to lip. Takes years off your face. Also white out under the brows to "open" your eyes.

<><> As one grows older, make sure lipstick on lower lip is carried up almost into mouth crease---avoids the aging drooping mouth look. Lastly apply a near-shade of lipstick pencil to even the lipline.

<><> Hair extensions are very inexpensive---hers are used to shadow a puffy face.

<><> The shade of makeup, lipstick and blush made the miracle here---they toned down her unattractive pinkness w/ gold tones. The blush was also applied at her hairline.

<><> A darker shade of makeup narrowed her nose in a lateral application.

<><> The very artful eye makeup takes a sure, practiced hand.

In Hollywood, makeup artists used to give aging actors/actresses "instant facelifts"---by applying a darker shade of makeup at their chinlines.
