That is an easy one! Families with two televisions and a Nielsen box simply put that TV on MSNBC, and Fox on the non monitored TV.
After comparing the two shows, the next night they immediately dropped MSNBC for FOX on all TVs.

liberal slant. So Maddow’s liberal viewers tuned in the second night
to hear Kelly’s liberal slant.

It appears to me that a lot of liberals are pissed off about the complete and utter failure of Obamacare and don’t have any interest in being lied to about it by MSNBC.
They know that FOX has been warning of the impending failure and just this once want to get ahead of the game.
