On the seventh day of the shutdown, President Obama called on House Republican leaders Monday to allow a vote immediately on a short-term measure to reopen government operations.
Mr. Obama said he strongly suspects there are enough votes in the House to reopen the government today.
The truth of the matter is, there are enough Republican and Democratic votes in the House of Representatives right now to end this shutdown immediately with no partisan strings attached, Mr. Obama said during a surprise visit to FEMA headquarters in the district. The House should hold that vote today.
The president said he is happy to talk to Republicans about budget issues, but not under threat of a shutdown or a government default.
Were not going to establish that pattern, Mr. Obama said, urging the GOP to move beyond this manufactured crisis.
Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, has said there are not enough votes in the House to pass a clean resolution to reopen the government temporarily. He said Democrats must accept changes to Obamacare before Republicans will agree to a budget deal.
Providing fairness to the American people, under Obamacare, is all were asking for, he said.
Mr. Obama dared Mr. Boehner to hold a vote.

Great point! I will use it in the future, hat tip to mrsmel!
Pretty ballsy to demand the House does something while Dingy Harry is holding a strike in the Senate.
That's likely what they said about social security and medicare and here we are decades later with both still growing.
Socialized medicine is maximized in England yet they still make no move to get rid of it .
That's because once it's entrenched there's no getting rid of it.
Agreed! It is going down either way and the quickest way will be the complete lack of participation by the 20-30 somethings.
Gee, last time I checked, the Clown is NOT IN CHARGE OF THE HOUSE. The petulant man-child might THINK his magic rhetoric can create such a world, but that is very, very wrong.
“Mr. President, We welcome your signature on any of the FOUR BUDGETS we have already submitted.”
“The American people are not impressed with your pretense that you're wait for the House to act.”
The thing is, it’s a different world today, especially with social networking and 24/7 news. Many more ways to communicate regarding this disaster.
demands??
LOL
eat it, pole smoker
I don’t think the mess can be reversed. The destruction has already begun. The genie can’t be put back in the bottle quickly or easily.
Did he double dog dare him?
The House passed a funding bill. That is all that has to happen. The Senate is not supposed to be able to add or subtract from it. The House funded the government. It left the Affordable Care Act unfunded.
Boehner should tell Obama he has gotten all he is going to get.
Congress does not need to order the Executive Branch agencies and Departments to re-open. The White House shut them. Let them fix what they did.
You’re spot on. Obama has lost a lot of voters over what he’s done. The polls I’ve seen are of all adults, not likely voters and without a demographic breakdown, etc.
The way you pivot off of ‘Obamacare’ is to simply pass a CR that is clean, citing Obama’s shenanigans as bad faith bargaining. Pin all the goofy stuff on Obama.
There’ve been a lot of ‘government shutdowns’ where people stayed at their desks and worked during the entire ‘shut down’. Via the Democratic Party inspired Sequester, we will win step by step. A new POTUS will change the priorities back to something normal.
Let Reid think he’s had his victory, let the Dems be magnanimous in victory (we’ve already won important concessions). Next up, debt ceiling limit.
The House has already voted, there are no strings, so NO.
NO, no surrender! Period.
Exactly, maybe you should write to Boehner and tell him that.
The House of Representatives has the power of impeachment. The Senators are obligated by the Constitution to appropriate funds necessary to maintain the Republican form of government as mandated by the U.S. Constitution. In the event the Senators fail and refuse to fufill their Constitutional obligation to maintain the Republic, the House of Representatives may impeach the Senators for breach of their oaths of office. The Senate is solely responsible for the trial and conviction of any Senators, President, or Vice President impeached by the House of Representatives. It remains to be seen how it would be possible to procure such a conviction or convictons from the Democrat controlled Senate, but you have to wonder whether or not the impeached Senators have the right to sit in judgement upon their own impeachments?
In any event, impeachments with or without convictions would convey the determination to bring the Senators face to face with the determination of their opponents, now and in the near future.
Have you heard that Obama is placing Harry Reid in charge of all “negotiations” with the House. Obama’s running away. We’re winning. Recognize victory when you see it. Reid will deal, those checks to Democrat constituencies need to be cut.
Very good points and worth repeating.
