My uncle did the same and wound up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He married his nurse at St. Albans Naval Hospital and went on to have a very full life. Never once complained about his disability and loved, loved loved the Navy. He would be beyond disgusted by the cretin in the WH.
My Uncle (God rest) took shrapnel from a kamikaze, first time they saw them. Never talked about it. Not til the end. I have his purple heart, his dog tags the shrapnel and the telegram to my grandmother saying he was injured.
