WASHINGTON, D.C. - WPSD Local 6 got an inside glimpse Wednesday night to how much the government shutdown is about the messaging for congressional lawmakers.
After finishing an interview with CNN, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul ran into Senator Mitch McConnell, who was waiting for an interview of his own.
In front of a camera, with a microphone on, the two Kentucky leaders talked strategy. Senator Paul began, "Do you have a second?" "I'm all wired up here, um," Senator McConnell replied.
"I just did CNN and I just go over and over again 'We're willing to compromise. 'We're willing to negotiate.' I think... I don't think they poll tested we won't negotiate. I think it's awful for them to say that over and over again," Paul said.
"Yeah, I do too and I, and I just came back from that two hour meeting with them and that, and that was basically the same view privately as it was publically," McConnell agreed.
Paul added, "I think if we keep saying 'We wanted to defund it. We fought for that and that we're willing to compromise on this', I think they can't, we're gonna, I think... well I know we don't want to be here, but we're gonna win this I think."
Paul has said that he doesn't want a government shutdown, but that the U.S. must find ways to reduce debt.
This genius is the GOP frontrunner for POTUS in 2016?
I dunno, Viennacon, ...knowing McConnell lives for coming up with nothing, or caving entirely, and that neither “want to be where we are”, what is there to possibly win when McConnell is included in that... “we” business, as Rand remarked?
At least this was said in passing, not like Coburn saying the Republicans will fold like a pancake. He should know.
That really does suck
SURPRISE SURPRISE! Looks like another talking point. Obama wants to turn us into a third world hell hole. What better way to his commie agenda than to turn off the hiring of AMERICAN citizens!
Make Dingy eat his peas and pass a balanced budget.
Maybe Midge is ALWAYS all *wired up*, so Rand didn’t get the drift - business as usual.
LMAO! Oh how sweet it would be!
That’s how I took it too. When “we” includes McConnell, there is never anything won. Rand said, “I think *we*’re going to win this.”
Boner still needs to go down, just a month from now.
Dr. Paul is a loose cannon.
Lord above! The Pubbies talk to each other and develop strategies? Who knew? Is this a recent development?
You are right. Thanks. The “it’s awful” part. Do you think he means “it’s awful strategy”, or “it’s awful ethically”? I assume the former, mostly because of the earlier “poll-tested” part. The reason I am asking is because they probably have a much better idea than anyone else how this is playing out in the public. If they mean “it’s awful strategy”, then it would seem unambiguous that the Republicans are getting some encouraging numbers.
They don’t want to be there. Going into this, the polling looked bleak and the chuckle heads on Fox were slamming them left and right.
However, things are looking brighter each day for a few reasons.
- They have more bipartisan support than the opposition
- They forced red state Democrat senators to make votes that will be disastrous in 2014
- Obama really screwed up putting those Barry-cades up around the WWII memorial. He’s being trashed everywhere for that.
- Harry Reid’s declaration of “why would we stop kids dying of cancer?” is going to become infamous
- The rollout has been a disaster. Websites crashing and overloaded, yet they’ve signed up 1%.
- Obama is weaker than they thought he would be. His speeches are stale, and his approval is around 40% and dropping.
Remarkably, events are turning against Reid and co.

>> “I’m all wired up here, um,” Senator McConnell replied.
What’s to parse? They realize they’re on live mic.
I just tried to get info on a National Park and the server was shut down. Same principle.
A server just runs forever on the internet without any human intervention. Who gave the orders to shut them down? Why? Isn’t this petulant and childish?
On the other hand, I never listen to NPR because I am philosophically opposed to fed funding for a propaganda dispensing organizing. Yet their website has not been disabled. Go figure....
The RATS must have bet that the campaign to 'BRAND' the GOP as extremists, terrorists, bomb wearing, would pull their [the GOP's] numbers down so far they couldn't recover.
The RATS had to take the 'We won't Negotiate' track else, if they give during this time, it will set a precedent going forward.
There's the money quote. 0bama is as intransigent privately as he is publicly. TOTUS has not "bent over backwards" to work with Republicans. That was a lie.
Exasperated Obama tells congressional leaders he will not negotiate (Obama owns the shutdown)
Just since this moring 0bama has said "I won't negotiate" then he said "I bent over backwards" then he said "I won't negotiate" then he had his private meeting making it appear that he would work with the House and now we find out he refused to negotiate there.
0bama is cycling faster than a schizophrenic on meth.
What is there to win? Obamacare is not going to be delayed or un-funded. The rollout happened. Debt ceiling? Obama doesn’t have to run again. He spoke to Harwood today so he could speak to Wall Street. Believe what you want but Wall Street will not allow a default. Too many R’s have funding ire directly to it. Hell even the Koch’s don’t want it. Lets face it 250 million buys you policy. I still see no way of “winning” whatever that looks like. I have cheered out in public but post my real thoughts here. I am not afraid or squimesh but I do understand reality. Do the CR and we could get a favorable budget through conference. We have a good solid pr position on spending but the shutdown is not helping. The house is going to cave. 21 and counting so far have publicly said they would pass cr. how many Dems said they would defund Obamacare? By my count 2 in house and maybe 1 senator. What will be the tipping point? 40? 50? Not many more.
Again just one mans opinion but I ask again what does a win look like? What has to happen for republicans to say yes we won. How likely are we to get there? I am curious to see shut down polls. They will start dropping tomorrow and Friday.
Excellent point !!!
