Why would a Government shutdown close this Memorial?
It just sits there. It doesn’t need employees.

It is being shut down because it is highly visible, and will inconvenience tourists when it is shut down. This seems to be more ‘nudging’ by our administration
I would imagine that they shut these sites down simply because they cannot open associated public restrooms that would need to be maintained.
You need to ask? Obama of course. It was shut down to be a thorn in America's side.

It’s the Washington Monument syndrome. During the government shutdown they close the most public things to make it look worse than it is.
In short, there is no reason they should close this Memorial. They did it because they know people will get angry about it and clamor to end the shutdown.
