Two years ago, Gayne C. Young, a Texas-based writer and blogger for Outdoor Life, scored the interview of a lifetime. As a beat writer, Young had enjoyed the outdoor exploits of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been documented shooting a gray whale with a crossbow, tranquilizing a tiger attacking a news crew, hunting shirtless, fishing shirtless, and riding horseback shirtless. On a personal level, Young liked the rugged brand of masculinity that seemed a throwback to Teddy Roosevelt. "Although you have Clinton shooting ducks, you never see it. Although Rick Perry says he enjoys hunting, you don't see it. They say they do, but they don't. Obama says he shoots skeet, but they only released one picture," Young says. "Here's a guy out there fishing, with no qualms. He's like, 'You don't like it? Tough.' Then he'd escalate and do more."

"The term "worship" here is just regular leftist name calling."
My observation is that FR-type conservatives are an irascible lot who are not prone to worship ANY political figure. FR conservatives value certain principles, and "conservative" politicians who violate those principles quickly fall out of favor.
The politician who came closest to receiving conservative "worship" was probably Sarah Palin, but when her and her family followed the "celebrity" route after the 2008 election, her image was severely tarnished on FR. I think she has recently shown signs of recovering from that flirtation with celebrity, and may again establish herself as a political force capable of winning office.

Yeah, when one is a despot and the other is a despotic, Marxist, faggot, who do you root for?

"I would have thought that Putins slap at American exceptionalism (an article of faith here at FR) would have blown that admiration of Putin to smithereens."
Several other countries have or used to have a strong sense of THEIR exceptionalism, e.g., England, France, Italy, Spain, China, Japan, India, Germany, Israel, and Russia come to mind. In my college days I studied the Russian philosopher Berdyaev, who wrote extensively on the topic of Russian exceptionalism, although he did not use that word.
For a long time, Russians have believed that their country plays a unique role in world history. That idea used to be tied-in with Orthodoxy, then was sidetracked into Soviet communism, and is now looking for a new expression in which Orthodoxy may again play a role. So I think Putin is giving voice to a very traditional Russian view of things.

The new narrative. Conservatives love foreign despots. No, I don't care for Obama at all.

Putin is not our friend. That said, Putin is very shrewd at picking up and using and somewhat embracing things he knew made America exceptional.
He knows that our leadership is facilitating the decline of America and in a way he is rubbing in our faces how he has learned a lesson from the old Soviet system and is now leading Russia to the top while the US is racing to the bottom, financially, morally, culturally, and militarily etc. How can we deny this is so?
Now we know that he is doing some fooling with us, but the absolute disgrace that is Obama has set this stage for Putin to preen and he is making himself the leading man in the next act.
Very sad for America. Three more years of Obama will be three years to much, I fear.

The Secret American Subculture Of Putin-Worshippers...
This "secret subculture" consists of a few comments made on a few message boards, and many of those comments were made in semi-jest. That is hardly a "subculture." Some of us were just surprised to hear Putin sounding more like the pope than the actual pope. It's kind of like libs dredging up a 50-year-old comment by William F. Buckley in support of their view on some current controversy; it's not as if they would actually have supported Buckley in real life.

I don’t believe Putin (ex kgber that he is) gives a rat’s patoot about Christianity or the gay agenda, except insofar as he is able to maintain control over those populations.

Yo Biggie, I don't worship the guy, but I do secretly kinda enjoy his brand of Teddy-Roosevelt-macho-hosshiite. OK, he was a KGB assassin. You don't like that? Tough Shiite.
Now compare that hyped-up bravado and frankly ...well ...bluster ... to the Kenyan Pansy that somehow found his way to the WH on the backs of 50+% of the American electorate who apparently cannot tell a jive-ass Chicago "community organizer" of ambiguous sexuality from an American. Unless this Mombasa MF's teleprompter is turned on, I cannot tell whether he is mentally alive or brain-dead. Neither can I tell if he wants the Republic to survive, or whether he wants us all to be Trayvon.
Putin? Well he's no Pinochet, but he'll do.
