The Obama administration is nearing completion of a proposal to require that movie theaters offer technology so blind and deaf people can go to the cinema.
The draft rule, which is part of a decades-long effort by advocates for people with disabilities, would likely require thousands of movie theaters across the country to offer devices that display closed captioning and provide audio narration of whats happening onscreen.
Disability associations say that the new regulation will make sure that blind and deaf people can appreciate the latest blockbuster just like everyone else.
But theater owners worry that a federal mandate will force small, rural and struggling theaters to close given the costs associated with the rule.
These theaters can barely stay in existence and often need community support to break even, the trade group wrote in a comment to the Justice Departments 2010 precursor to the upcoming proposal. To require them to install expensive closed captioning technology at this time is an undue financial burden that may result in these theaters closing.

Some people should just stay home.
It would also result in many patrons not going out to movies. The last thing I want to see running across the screen is words, unless I was watching some sort of international movie that was not in English.
It would be far better to ensure Hollywood has that on the DVD’s for sale, if they don’t already.
Heh heh. Obama is now going after Hollywood.
Ah, Schadenfreude...
I was wondering if the words would show on the screen myself. I watched the video clip and two of the deaf women were wearing special glasses so I think only they see them which would be far better I think.
Now the blind and deaf can become brainwashed by Hollywood yay!
With something like google glasses for the closed captioning and wireless headphones for the blind, you wouldn’t see or hear anything that you don’t today.
In TV terms, I think it is called “pay for view.”
I’m sure it is cheaper than actually going to the movies.
If the deaf are wearing special goggles, that wouldn’t be so bag. It’s not as though that would affect me, but it would put smaller theatres at a disadvantage, because they couldn’t afford this technology.
Couldn’t private companies offer an app that would do this and which could be bought by those who need it? Instead of demanding businesses install such expensive equipment? I support accommodating the disabled but this I would equate more with requiring a business make sure they have trained service dogs available for patrons rather than just requiring service dogs be allowed in with their disabled owner.
Sit the people who are hard of hearing next to the speakers, and the people who are seeing impaired up next to the screen.
While the government is at it, they should also require a don't try this at home warning for every dangerous stunt.
I like the way you think. I think I'll try that. Yeah, I have an idea!
Why don't we feed the homeless to the hungry?
Listen!
Do you smell that?
How about the rights of deaf and blind people to be airline pilots? Or the rights of atheists to be Catholic Priests? Or the rights of midgets to join the NBA?
True.
Not a bad idea, though I suspect that the homeless are a little on the gamey side.
....or how about the rights of idiots to run for political office? Oh never mind!
Sounds like a plan to me!
LOL.
I have poor eyesight myself (but am not blind), but it really stretches my imagination to see how theatres could be forced to accommodate blind people. You can’t make brail movies.
