I would think they would put their resources where they can bring the greatest return on investment vis-a-vis their goals. And I wouldn't normally think the Sahel would be high on the list of priorities.

And, the map you posted shows that their operations conform almost precisely to the Sahel to the exclusion of other areas. That would imply that the Sahel might hold some strategic interest and I wonder what that might be.

Muzzies are used to living in desert, not least because the former verdant lands they took over became deserts in short order.

That map is a few years old.

They operate in Libya, Nigeria; and various other parts of Africa.

Every little periodic power struggle in any little African crap-hole will find al-Qaeda offering a phony alliance with one or the other faction, followed by the ingress of foreign-trained jihadists, and then the cooption or obliteration of their “allies”.

Nigeria has yellowcake uranium and petroleum. The southern Sudan has petroleum. And as noted above, the more muzzie splinter nations arise, the sooner the UN General Assembly is taken over.
