Could Guns Be a Key Issue in the Texas Governor’s Race?
kfyo ^ | Sept 11, 2013 | Chad Hasty

Texas State Senator Wendy Davis hasn’t announced whether or not she will run for Governor. Is she does though, you can bet that the 2nd Amendment will be one of the key issues of debate. According to the Texas Tribune, Davis did vote to allow student to leave guns in their cars while attending college, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t for restrictions.

The topic of gun restrictions will spice things up, too.

Davis, who became an instant political celebrity after filibustering a restrictive abortion bill in June, voted in favor of allowing students to carry guns in their vehicles on college campuses. She is a gun owner and has said she believes the Second Amendment guarantees Americans that right. In a lot of states, that would probably put her in the pro-gun camp.

But this is Texas, where licensed gun toters are allowed to bypass the metal detectors at the state Capitol and the sitting governor once shot a coyote to death while jogging. Ann Richards, the last Democratic governor, found out the hard way that getting between Texans and their guns can be politically dangerous. She opposed concealed handgun legislation and vetoed a referendum on it, handing George W. Bush a great campaign issue in 1994. Texans got a concealed carry law in Bush’s first session as governor.

Despite the risks, Davis, known for waging sometimes lonely political battles, has not been afraid to pick a fight over guns — in particular over gun shows.

As a member of the Fort Worth City Council, Davis tried to impose restrictions on guns shows held at municipal facilities. She wanted to ensure that people were buying from licensed dealers or otherwise faced background checks.

Under current law, nothing prevents people at gun shows from buying guns from other people attending them. Critics say evil-doers exploit this loophole by buying and selling firearms at gun shows, often in large quantities, that later show up at crime scenes. According to a recent reportin the Dallas Observer, for example, a Texas man went to numerous gun shows around the state to purchase dozens of assault rifles that authorities say were sold at a high profit to buyers who sent them to Mexico.

According to the report, one of his gun show stops was the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, which would have been regulated by the restrictions Davis unsuccessfully sought.

In a recent interview, Davis didn’t back down from her position on gun shows, though she acknowledged it’s not a politically popular one. She said that if she were governor, she would leave the issue to the will of the Legislature but would happily sign gun show regulations into law.

“I haven’t pursued it as a senator because I know it’s like spitting in the wind,” she said. “But I still believe it’s the right thing. And if I were governor and a bill came to my desk that provided for background checks at gun shows, I would sign that.”

That position puts her at odds with the front-running GOP candidate for governor, Attorney General Greg Abbott. When Travis County and the city of Austin were mulling gun show restrictions several months ago, Abbott warned on Twitter that they better start preparing for “a double-barreled lawsuit.”

We still wait to see if Wendy Davis decides to run for Governor, but I can’t trust her when it comes to standing up for the 2nd Amendment. Personally I’d like to hear more from the candidates about guns and Campus/Open Carry.

Typical female politician “think.”

SAFETY! CHILDREN! SCHOOLS! SAFETY! CHILDREN! SCHOOLS! and on and on and on........

And......who do they expect to provide this SAFETY? The nanny, politically correct, Socialists of course. And??? Who is their main body of support? Women of course who are more concerned with the safety of children than their own safety and freedoms.

Do your research. We have PLENTY of MARXISTS here that would love to ban guns from Texas entirely.

We have Sheila (I’m a retard) Jackson Lee, we have the Castro brothers from San Antonio, we have Lloyd Doggett, and numerous others.

I don’t even know why they live here. They hate our freedoms! What’s left of them.

Greg Abbott could have a slam dunk here, if he came out and loudly endorsed legal open carry. He already has, but it should be a banner headline on his campaign.

http://mattsdowling.com/attorney-general-greg-abbott-talks-guns/

“I saved the last question of the interview to ask (Attorney) General Abbott if he supported open carry. I wanted to get a clear answer, so I just asked for a “Yes” or “No” answer and he responded with a “Yes.” He later added that he felt an open carry law would have similar success as the Concealed Handgun License Laws have had in Texas.”

While this is good, he should run with it with confidence, as it has zero potential to cost him any votes by those that oppose him, and could make his supporters even more enthusiastic about supporting him.

As an aside, back in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, when there was the second big wave of gun control in the US, as well as arguments about self defense in the home with guns, a new District Attorney had been elected in Phoenix, and the reporters wanted to know his opinions on the subject.

So at his first press conference they asked him: “What should people do if someone breaks into their home?”

His reply was golden. “You shoot the S.O.B.!” And he did not abbreviate that expression. Total clarity by everyone.

And that has remained the policy in Phoenix ever since, now just taken for granted in *legal* settings. Prosecutors, defense councils, and courts all understand that rule and follow it, as if it is written in concrete.

No equivocation. No parsing. No interpretation needed. No confusion. Exactly what gun law should be.

And the same should apply to Texas open carry.

Need a law that says - you take any entitlement payments at all, whatsoever, you forfeit the right to vote for 10-12 years.

Um... Isn’t Sheila Jackson Lee from Texas?

HELL NO!

She is from New York and MOVED to Texas! Saying SJL is from Texas is much like calling Bradley Manning a "she." You can call yourself a stump, but that doesn't make you one!

The second amendment is always front and center in any election held in the state of Texas....it is there just daring any liberal to bring it up. As far as Miss Davis supporting CWP students being able to bring their guns to school, Miss Davis is like any liberal on the issue. She will fain support until elected at which time she will start implementing the liberal incremental strategy.First limiting carrying to the glove box of your car then to the trunk then only if the ammo is stored separate from the weapon then only on rainy days etc. etc. etc.!!! There will not be a governor Davis for quite a while in Texas.

Still the point was made that Anti-BoR politicians can’t get elected in Texas. This was patently an... over statement.

Texas has been heading in the right direction... Generally. But y’all still got some work to do.

Wish I was still down there to help out. Maybe once all the in-laws and out-laws die out up here, I can talk my other Half into moving back. “Family first” though.

Guns won’t be an issue because anyone who opposes the Bill Of Rights in Texas can’t get elected.

Not in a State-wide election, not even a democratic primary.
