Russia’s Moskva missile cruiser, dubbed by a “carrier-killer” by NATO, has passed through the Straits of Gibraltar and is now heading toward the eastern Mediterranean to join the Russian naval force as flagship.
The Russian Navy said in a statement that the Moskva cruiser passed through the Straits of Gibraltar on September 10.
Interfax news agency added that the Moskva cruiser, “commanded by Sergey Tronev, Captain 1st Rank of the Guards… has enough room for maneuver now.”
“The Black Sea flagship entered the Russian Navy's area of responsibility in the Mediterranean at 11:00 pm Moscow time yesterday," the agency reported a military source as saying.
The missile-carrying cruiser is expected to join its final destination in eastern Mediterranean on September 15 or 16.

Despite Bam’s efforts to make us a third world nation we still have the best N=navy in the world and could take the Moskva out in minutes,
I’d make a snide comment about not having to worry about a Russian carrier killing cruiser since we haven’t sent any of our carriers to the region. But I have little confidence that that sort of analysis isn’t exactly what’s being discussed at the highest levels of the Administration.
and why are we going to take out a vessel of a sovereign country we are not at war with before it fires?
Its an old ship not worth nearly as much as a carrier, if it takes out a carrier what does it matter than we sank it afterward?
Better to avoid the scenario
They did use to tow their ships around a lot. Saving fuel or broken down.
They were not spacious ships by any means, meaning no spares, not easily repaired underway, and more difficult damage control from what I heard.
Armed forces are only as good as their commanders IMO. Yes, in the 80’s we had the best Navy in the world hands down. I think now the Navy is just a liberal wet dream of diversity, queer rights and weak little girls running around being bitchy

What damage control. Went aboard a Kara class cruiser in Norfolk in the early 90s. Water tight compartmentation was non existent by our standards. Joiner doors through structural bulkheads, ladderways between decks without hatches, wire ways and piping passing through compartments without stuffing tubes, Didn’t see a single fire fighting station on the weather decks or in most of the compartments we were shown. Though they did have a nice sauna and a swimming pool.
We never knew for certain if we had nukes on board. The fire and leave at flank speed was well known by the crew. The ASROC had the capability to launch nuclear thingies.

My neighbor was a fast attack sub XO and later the CO of a fast attack sub. He called those "Fire it and kiss your @$$ goodbye" weapon. Last resort to use against a large number of surface ships. Kind of like the tactical nuke fired from the M1 tanks. Best shoot those over a hillside.

It’s armed with 16 SS-N-12 anti-ship missiles, each with a range of 300 nm and carrying a 1000 kg warhead. Speed is supersonic. A salvo of missiles will form a network, with one missile flying high to acquire targets an feeding data to the other missiles flying at low altitude to evade radar. If the high missile is shot down, another will take its place in the formation. The networked missiles will also classify and prioritize targets. Air defenses are not shabby, with the primary weapon being the SA-N-6 Grumble missile, which is more comparable to the Patriot missile than the RIM-66 or RIM-67 Standard missile.
The drawback with the ship design is that it packs a lot of weaponry on a hull its size, making it cramped. Damage control would be a challenge.
I have to wonder if any of the ordnance aboard the Russian ship contains chemical agents supplied by Syria????
