TONY Abbott is on the verge of repeating his political mentor's 1996 wipeout of the Labor party, as senior ALP figures said the election was lost and Kevin Rudd prepared to concede defeat.
Former cabinet minister Stephen Smith was one of the first to call the result, saying Labor was headed for a landslide defeat that could rival Paul Keating's loss to John Howard, when the party was reduced to 49 seats.
This is a 1996 type election, Mr Smith told the ABC.
The question will be how far will the blows go to the loss of Labor seats.
Labor sources say Mr Rudd would not wait long to concede defeat and would deliver a concession speech to the Labor faithful.
Mr Rudd recently arrived at The Gabba in Brisbane and would soon call Mr Abbott to congratulate him on his victory.

Just wondering what is the transition time from one government to the next, after an election? How long before Liberal take over?
no worries, I think my question was answered
Normally, it’s a little over a week. But there are some indications it may be a bit less this time.
Has something changed, the projections are that Labor wasn’t as badly defeated as first thought.
Australia voters came to their senses. Why can’t The USA?
It’s hard to know exactly what the numbers are - we’re probably at least 25 seats ahead, but beyond that it’s hard to say at the moment.
I am watching the Labor Party on TV cheering as if they won!
What’s the best website or link for live coverage. Would be great to listen to a live stream!
Bring back your guns and then we will talk
I own more guns now than I used to, but never gave any up.
There are millions of legal firearms in private hands in Australia. Australia has some dumb gun laws, but not as bad as a lot of Americans seem to have been lead to believe.
Thank you! I’m listening Rudd’s surprisingly upbeat concession speech.
I was in Oz for over a month working in Melbourne back in 2004. I fell in love with the place ;-)
Australia, welcome back to the RIGHT side of the anglosphere. We all look forward to our American cousins joining us soon.
Drudge is linked to a Reuters story: Conservative leader Abbott wins landslide Australia election victory:
Election officials said with about 65 percent of the vote counted, Abbott's Liberal-National Party coalition had won around 54 percent of the national vote, and projected it would win at least 77 seats in the 150-seat parliament. Party analysts said Abbott would end up with a majority of around 40 seats, ending the country's first minority government since World War Two. Labor had relied upon independent and Greens support for the past three years. If Labour was partying, it must be from their defeat not being as bad as they thought it would be, and thinking there are enough CINOs in Abbott's party that they can make some deals.

Exactly so. As draconian as Australia's gun laws are, it's not the UK or Japan.
