Military Revolts Against Obama Attack On Syria

Mideast: The administration's planned strike on Syria is increasingly opposed by many in a U.S. military coping with the scars of two long wars, a rapidly shrinking budget and soldiers saying we're "tired, stretched thin and broke."

That sentiment was expressed by an active-duty soldier with a rank of Sergeant First Class in an email to Rep. Justin Amash. The Michigan Republican has been receiving, compiling and tweeting emails from current and former service members now being asked to commit to an ill-defined mission with an unclear goal in support of rebels mostly linked to al-Qaida and other unfriendly interests.

"The message I consistently hear: Please vote no on military action against Syria," Amash tweeted. Most objections relate to the lack of a clear objective in striking Syria and the muddled line between anti-government rebels and al-Qaida-affiliated terrorists.

The backlash against boots on the ground or even wings in the air has exploded on social media. Many in the military are posting photos of themselves holding signs stating they'd refuse to fight on the same side as al-Qaida in Syria. The photos went viral, with one post alone generating more than 16,000 shares on Facebook.

"Our involvement in Syria is so dangerous on so many levels, and the 21st century American vet is more keen to this than anybody," Business Insider's Paul Szoldra quotes former Cpl. Jack Mandaville, a Marine Corps infantry veteran with three deployments to Iraq. "It boggles my mind that we are being ignored."

A decade of involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, with many of the rank and file seeing the fruits of their victories squandered by the Obama administration's precipitous, ideologically driven withdrawals, raises the question why we should bother about Syria.

A Hydrogen nuke is certainly the biggest bang for the buck. Hydrogen is what fuels every star in the universe and hydrogen makes things happen like the creation of new stars and along with water and under the right conditions it makes life. But the nukes of 1945 would still do the job. In fact think of one Hiroshima type bomb detonated over Times Square or London or any major city. After the initial blast, the millisecond wherein for thousand of square yards the heat released is many times that of the surface of the sun and the shock wave, panic among the populace would be beyond belief.

I believe the 10000 year figure comes from bombs with a cobalt casing, not the ones we dropped on Japan. They can be made so the residual radiation is lingering and nasty, or they can be made so they kill the soft targets and leave the infrastructure (neutron bomb) with little residual radiation. It depends on what you want to do.

The good ones have known it from the start - that so many are risking careers to protest is a sign that the military hasn't yet been subverted to the point it can be used to squash the People. Because of this "bad news" I fully expect some "steps" to be taken and word to be spread about the hazards of dissing the CIC. We just got a recent reminder that if classified is leaked and running around the web where any Tom,-Dick-Harry can see it, those in service of Uncle Sugar can be prosecuted for viewing the "offending material" even on personal computers. I guess we need to constantly clear our history/cache in case we hit a site that has some classified on it and we don't realize it - I'm sure it will be watched for and used to purge the "undesirables".

BTW - I retire while Klintoon was CIC - my signed papers will never grace my den wall...

Do you have any examples of where you were asked to fight for Communists? Because the only major military operations I remember from that time were helping the Belgians and French in Zaire, and the fiasco with rescuing the hostages in Iran. We also worked with Egyptian and Israeli forces, but that was training-related.

That “they” got nervous about allowing civilian idiots to try to control the DOD is something only seasoned veterans will appreciate.

Just thinking about my lifetime - Eisenhower, Kennedy, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama - all of those Presidents were civilians while in the White House. Maybe my memory is faulty - which of those Presidents were anything other than civilians?

I don't think a strike would kick off such an action, but they are probably either referring to the Saudis fighting a proxy war with Iran in Iraq and Syria, or the Saudis facing a long-term "insurgency", for lack of a better word, on their own turf. There are a lot of radicals in Saudi Arabia who would like to see the royalty overthrown.
