Horse hockey. If it is in the trash, it is fair game to consume unless the company has a specific published or posted policy against it.

Our plant actually encourages employees to take home stuff which has been discarded . . . all that much less we have to pay the trash man to haul it away.

I know food is a different animal because safety may be involved, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Plus our plant uses common sense. If it is the typical discard trash, then no problem. But if it is borderline, like someone throwing out a repairable office chair, then we need to get a permission tag. I think most places operate with similar common sense rules.

Does anyone know whether the shelf-life of fresh food (e.g., a pre-packaged sandwich or an apple) is based on local health laws or on company policy? But regardless of what it is, I would think that the expiration date is probably several days short of when the item might actually be considered potentially harmful. You do not want to go right up to the deadline on those things and risk getting all your customers sick.

Want to hear a good one? A Cousin of mine installs Commercial Kitchens for Restaurants and also bids on Government Contracts for large scale Food Service facilities.

They were updating the equipment at a Military Base and took out the old but still working Commercial Dishwasher.
She asked if the equipment could be donated to a Food Bank or other Charity Organization when they took it out.

She was told the old Dishwasher, still worth Thousands of Dollars BTW, had to be dismantled and scrapped per Policy.
The Government even hired a guy to destroy it.
