So, my son and I will be in Chicago at the end of the month. Am I correct in assuming that this really just animals shooting other animals and not anything random?

Similar to many major cities, Chicago has better areas than others. The South Side is generally considered the hotbed for significance violence and the Tribune has published maps which compare neighborhoods. Some of the crime has encroached into the better areas but the shootings and such remain in higher probability in certain ‘hoods. That said, I would never let my guard down while visiting a city.
