Both the sport and culture of surfing are increasingly at risk due to the effects of climate change. Quite simply, surfing is reliant on healthy oceans and coasts. So as climate change drives fundamental changes sea-level rise, ocean warming and acidification the result could be a great readjusting, and potential loss, of the worlds surf communities.
Chad Nelsen-Wanker, environmental director for the Surfrider Foundation, a grassroots network of surfers in eighteen countries around the globe, explains that the worlds surf spots are very sensitive to change. While surfers are often the most attuned to the conditions that impact their local waves, many of the climate-related shifts are slow-moving and difficult to see. A lifelong surfer himself, Nelsen says hes been going to the shore at Laguna Beach since 1975 and hasnt really noticed a perceptible difference, despite what he knows is happening beneath the surface.

My God is there anything “climate change” can’t do.
Wait just a minute! Didn’t they tell us a couple of days ago the earth was cooling because the sun was flipping poles and that would increase the oceans’ tide?
That was all the talk in the late '70s.
The only really significant climate change has been the intellectual one which thinks a smidgen of CO2 can boil off the planet.
This morning on Weather Channel, there was a “scientist” from NASA explaining how climate change will produce a rash of wildfires in the upper midwest by 2050.....
Whoa Dude! Ya mean no more surfer flicks? Something’s not right in the Force!
Oh yeah, forgot about the dead guy there saying, “Vee haf vays uf making you zurf!”
These idiots can’t give it up can they, they just have to make up lie after lie trying to put the big scare into the public, unfortunately it works on all too many brain dead citizens.
As long as the sun shines and the moon orbits the earth, there will be waves to surf.
If the “expert” has been heading down to the Orange County beaches this summer, he would notice how cool and crappy the weather has been. I know “weather is not climate” (except when it suits them), but I think global cooling caused the “surf riots” in Huntington Beach a couple weeks ago.
Charlie has never surfed and he’s doing fine.
I LOL'd. But not as much as the time I learned that Lord Melchett was head of Greenpeace UK ... true story.
“As long as the sun shines and the moon orbits the earth, there will be waves to surf.”
I agree, but even if they were right, and there were no more surfing, what would the world have really lost?
