They weren’t tapping him without reason. Two of King’s closest advisers were Stanley Levison and Hunter Pitts O’Dell. Both were members of the Communist Party when the CPUSA was a front for the Soviet Union. The CPUSA had been trying to radicalize blacks for years with some notable success. It was the presence of these two that earned King his own wire taps.
