Our Saudi employees in Washington will or are protecting their interest. Remember the Saudi suspect in the Boston bombing and how fast Moochelle was there to pay homage at the hospital? He sure fell off the radar quick. These people running Washington will do anything to protect their Saudi and Mexican Narco incomes and the country be damned.
Rumor is that it is the OPEC gang.
Quick, better hire Matt Damon to make another anti-shale movie.
The Saudi have been trying for a good deal of time to develop an economy that is based upon manufacturing. Much of the manufacturing would be based upon using crude oil and distilling it into finished product such as gasoline, Fertilizer and then shipping those products. They have had very little success in this area and they are still stuck on oil as their main income generator.
The original thinking was that they would have a good market until 2020 and it would then begin to degrade but it seems that the new technologies have come in very early and they may end up with little market for their goods.
They are the fourth largest exporter of wheat (Southern Arabia) but that is about it.
Ping.
Good news.
Saudi Arabian oil export revenue gained in 2012 as Iran fell
http://fuelfix.com/blog/2013/07/29/saudi-arabian-oil-export-revenue-gained-in-2012-as-iran-fell/
Saudi Arabias revenue from exports of crude oil and other petroleum products in 2012 rose 5.3 percent from a year earlier while Irans income from sales abroad sank by 12 percent, OPEC reported.
The worlds largest crude exporter shipped oil and products valued at $336.1 billion last year, up from $319.1 billion in 2011...

You are not correct, they have had a lot of investment and infrastructure built and it continues to grow.
they are still stuck on oil as their main income generator
While true, that is due to more the immense size of their oil income, rather than a failure of the refined products and petrochem industry that is still new but growing significantly.
I did not know that they had been able to do so much successful investing. Then the situation is not quite as I understood it. Thanks for the update.
End the Sunni Caliphate Now!
A couple years ago I was working at a large firm that had bid on a piece of the complex. It was incredibly huge and has been under several stages of construction for several years. I believe the completed complex, say in 5 years because it will never be final, will be larger than the largest complex in Texas, the ship channel of the Freeport petrochem facilities.
They have built power plants, water and steam utilities systems. It is actually well thought out and thoroughly integrated.
Dow Chemical is the biggest outside player in the joint ventures, I believe.
Total (French) was one of the Refinery ventures, but I think there are others.

There is quite a bit built already. The satellite photo link below is probably a couple years old.

Zoom in to see names of different facilities tied together.
No, better a Saudi national converted to Christianity having escaped SA to the relative liberty of America.
Are these chemical plants for producing finished chemicals or are they just distilling operations?
Way, way more complicated than just distillation. These are full fledged modern refineries and chemical plants.
I suspect that their products will do well.
Let the muzzies eat their oil.
they have to radically change their political system if they want an advanced economy, which won’t happen.
I think the rulers are cold cynics who use religion to justify their theft and their debauchery. They have enough money to bribe the entire population, and hire help from abroad. The problem is, when your entire country is a Cabrini Green housing project full of welfare spawn, just with better accomodations and Bengalis to do the menial work, what happens when the money runs out?
