I hope that the GOP nominates Ted Cruz in 2016. Exactly one hundred years before that, in 1916, the GOP nominated Charles Evan Hughes, who came very close to beating President Woodrow Wilson that year. Hughes had previously been a Supreme Court justice. He was later appointed to be the Chief Justice by President Herbert Hoover, a Republican.Cruz was born a United States citizen even though his father was a citizen of Cuba. Hughes was born a United States citizen even though his father was a British citizen. Chief Justice Hughes believed himself to be a "natural born citizen." Why shouldn't Ted Cruz (Harvard Law) believe the same? He's got a Chief Justice on his side!!

"It was originally proposed in the Constitutional Convention that the presidential qualifications be a 'citizen of the United States.' It was so reported to the Convention, by theCommittee which had it in charge, on the 22nd day of August, 1787. It was again referred to aCommittee, and the qualification clause was changed to read 'natural born citizen,'and was so reported out of Committee on September the 4th, 1787, and adopted in the Constitution."
Madison's notes for the two dates (August 22, September 4) seem to confirm Long's account. It seems strange that he never mentioned Vattel in the account.
I'd say you know more about this issue than Long did. ;-)
