He felt like he couldn't be the same person he'd been in his old neighborhood, he said. What an idiot.
This is the same thing that farm boys and small town kids and mountain kids and big city kids ALL feel. It's called socialization...i.e. learning how to move about in societies which are different than the one you grew up in.

Except that his society prides itself on being idiotic.

yep, that happened with me, and I am a better person and my family is better off because of it. It doesn’t mean I don’t love farming and country life. Hopefully, it does mean that I won’t ever have my picture show up in “the people of Wal*Mart” or a Honey boo boo type reality show.

My kids came home from Africa to enroll in public school in a southern city which has a 67% black population. Our son was the only white boy in his class.
Now THAT was culture shock!
BTW, our son was the first white child seen by the tribe with whom we worked. Different skin color was nothing new to him. However, in many ways, he was closer to the culture of those Uganda villages than to that of a predominantly “African-American” USA elementary school.

It's the same thing our young troops feel every time they go to another country. The reason people pay to travel to other countries is to experience other cultures. This is a great opportunity for poor blacks, but true to their culture, they want people to feel sorry for them. Suck it up and stop your bellyaching. Show some respect for those who are paying for your education by doing a good job of it.
