For months, Democrats have been saying they wont agree to an immigration bill unless it has a path to citizenship. Reporters wrote it down. Many Republicans have also been saying the key sticking point is over the path to citizenshipthey oppose it.....
Meanwhile, Democratic bloggers have begun to urge the legalization-without-citizenship course on Republicans....
For Republicans, the non-citizenship path pushed by Labrador and others is arguably the worst of both worlds. They not only lose the immigration fightalienating both their conservative base and the white non-college voters who abandoned them in the 2012 election. They also give Democrats an opportunity to bash them relentlessly for making millions of Latinos into formal second-class residents.

1) Dems reject it and demagogue. I say they were going to demagogue anyway.
2) But suppose they wise up and pass it, and O signs it? As the srticle says, they still demagogue, saying the GOP has made the Dreamers "second class residents." Of course they would also scream about the adult illegals who are not even legalized.
A related FR thread is Obama says no to immigration without citizenship path
So does this refute what Kaus argues in this article? Will Dems still insist on citizenship? Id Kaus is correct, Obama may be trying to trick us.
“Would Dems accept legalization-without-citizenship”? ping
Of course, at this moment the House has no immigration bill at all.
Only chance to stop the Amnesty bill is for the House not to consider any immigration related bill at all.
Michelle Bachman explained it. ANY House bill no matter if it promises all the border security in the world will be a trojan horse.NO bill at all must come out of the House because it will be merged with the Senate Amnesty and trojan horse bill. Call congress.
Tell them to stop all Amnesty or immigration bills.they are all trojan horse bills. some will promise border security that will never be enforced anyway.
Bachmann explained it . The House will write a border security bill only . then in conference the senate will add the virus and then bring it back to the house. then the conservatives wont vote for it but democrats will all vote for it so then they only need 10% of republicans to pass Amnesty and the virus that will destroy America. so any bill at all will be added the virus . so best thing is for Boner to not let any immigration bill at all come out of the House. that is the only hope . call boner and the members of the House.
Tom Tancredo echos what Michelle Bachmann said.

call congress . no bill at all from the House
and of course boner must not bring the Senate bill for the House to vote on. no senate bill, no border security bill from the House .nothing.
Seems like if the trespassing foreign nationals already here really wanted to become citizens, they would have found a way to do it by now.
Naturalization without citizenship is a mistake, IMO.
Having two classes of people has never ended well.
If they are permitted to stay then they should have the ability to eventually become citizens.
giving our imprimatur to the third world invasion means we accept and embrace the fall of the rule of law and civilization itself
The GOP needs small bills and offer something NEW for each side. I could see:
Pass a “Dream Act” bill that includes an end to anchor babies and make sure it is not severable so that the Dreamsters lose citizenship if courts declare the end to anchor babies unconstitutional.
or
Pass an expanded guest worker program in exchange for E-verify being mandatory.
They should do one and then once it is signed into law, do another. Of course before any of these the ultimate shovel ready project, the fence, should be finished.
I came to the conclusion long ago that an amnesty bill with guest workers wo citizenship would create a civil war in the Dem party, if some tried to go for it, worse then we saw with the GOP last year.
Now would Obama sign a bill like if it reached his desk?? Of course he would if it said immigration in title, at least as long as Reid controls the Senate.
I like the quote above ‘Dem bloggers urge...’. Dems are not going for that. You see any link sources to that claim?
Ok, I read that entire editorial at link.
He is making that BS up. Citizenship is the deal breaker for Dems.
He cant find any real Dems would would go for ‘probation now-green card later-but no citizenship’. That would tear Dems apart, and Dems think they have the upper hand anyway regardless.
I don’t think he believes that part of what he wrote.
Thanks for posting this :)
I just realized you(we) moved from another thread to this one you just posted.
I don't know what to think. If Dems wanted to ambush the GOP they could pretend they would not accept legalization without citizenship and then do it anyway. I think if that happened, it would be bad for the GOP. But admittedly there is no one commander that could arrange that. Many Dems would catch hell from their leftist constituents if they went along with no citizenship. However, it's possible that after the House passed a no citizenship dream act, Dems might huddle and decide to pass it.
Kaus cites Loretta Sanchez and Steny Hoyer saying maybe no citizenship is OK. That is not convincing, but I am not sure what would happen.
if the House does pass it I hope the GOPe withers on the vine immediately
I made a post about this in another thread, but then I saw Obama's statement on CNN that he would NOT accept legalization-without-citizenship (see post #1). So I thought I should link both articles, the main one and the Obama CNN statement, in a new thread.
I have yet to see a credible source that says that any(real) Dem would accept that.
What would they tell Hispanics in 2014 ? : ‘We got your undocumented relatives legalized probation and the right to work at Walmarts but we couldn't get them access to the polls. Sorry, Something is better than nothing’
???
Hell, I can imagine how much fun it would be to get an account on a Dem website and help stir their ‘sell-out’ pot.
Recall, Chamber of Commerce and big Unions wrote that Senate bill. Can you imagine if they told the unions 'sorry, we had to cut out just the parts you won' ?
Blame everything on those racists in the GOP. Republicans are not very skillful at fighting back. No POTUS had ever been reelected after 4 years with a record like Obama. Sometimes it's easier to fool them than you might think.
But you might be right. Maybe the GOP will outmaneuver the Dems for once.
” Recall, Chamber of Commerce and big Unions wrote that Senate bill. Can you imagine if they told the unions ‘sorry, we had to cut out just the parts you won’ ? “
No sale : )
Let’s assume that you are right that Dems wuold never agree to a legailization-without-citizenship (although, as Goodlatte explained, under a legalization-only bill, they still might get citizenship via employer sponsorship or various other tricks). Are you confident that thr GOP delegates to a conference would not “compromise” on citizenship?
This is old ground.
I cant know if that cant possibly happen anymore than you can know that Bohner will keep his promise even if it means his ending this session of congress with no House immigration bill,
versus him at the end just doing what Senate RINOs and Dems are calling him to do, simply pass the Senate bill as is, which only requires ~ 20 GOP votes.
Its a rhetorical question because obviously no-one can know exactly how he would betray us if he is determined.
But I can assure you that Dems wont accept NO citizenship, you can tell by so many in GOP giving in on it, Bohner just joined that group.
BTW: Bohner had made strong promises to not just pass the Senate immigration bill (as is) but lets say 9 months from now there still is no house bill,
so whats to stop him from pulling a Hoeven-Corker and putting up the Senate bill with a few superficial changes for a vote after Pelosi assures him that she can get her side votes?
Nothing.... that doesn’t mean it will happen... or wont happen.
I don't mean to repeat old material, but the article did say Labrador was planning to negotiate this thing in conference. I think it would be remiss not to mention this very troubling possibilty.
C-3PO: Master Luke, sir. Pardon me for asking, but what should R2 and I do if we're discovered here?
Luke: Lock the door.
Han Solo: And hope they don't have blasters.
C-3PO: That isn't very reassuring.
