The Justice Department said Sunday that it will review the George Zimmerman case for possible civil rights violations, after a jury acquitted the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, while Zimmerman's attorney says his client's safety is at risk.
NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous started the drive by posting a petition Sunday morning on the website MoveOn.org that is addressed to Attorney General Eric Holder.
"The most fundamental of civil rights -- the right to life -- was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin," Jealous wrote in the petition.
The Justice Department has already been reviewing the handling of the criminal case in which Zimmerman, a Hispanic, fatally shot Martin, a black teen, in February 2012, raising concerns about such issues as racial profiling and equal justice....

Exactly! So far I haven't seen anyone else suggest this.
Who could make a valid case that his civil rights have been violated? I think it's obvious it's George Zimmerman --not the Martin family-- who have a legitimate civil rights case, under federal law.
From what I've read, there are only two paths that lead to a federal civil rights case:
(1) the path of showing that officials "under the color of legal authority" violated a citizen's rights; or
(2) the path of showing that a "bias crime" has been committed against a citizen.
George Zimmerman would have an excellent chance of meeting the first standard, I would think -- because George was arrested without probable cause and because Angela Corey maliciously prosecuted him, under color of legal authority.
The Martin family would have no basis for such a claim, nor can they claim that George committed a bias crime (the FBI already investigated and exonerated him of that phony charge a year ago).
The injustice Department can not indict Z for anything. And Congress should make that clear. As for the NAACP they would do better to insist that black parents marry and raise their children free from the thugocracy.
See post #7.
I don't remember the case but there was a man who was/or felt he had been defamed by a newspaper.
He started at the very top (I think the newspapers owner or something - a high up with $$$.) He kept pressing law suits and kept winning as he went down the line.
I think he sued the paperboy who delivered his newspaper each day.
I think that was the end of the lawsuits. I think the jury was offended and the man's lawyer correctly read the jury and told his client "drop the suit".
"Loser Pays".
Without question...
Yes!
“His dad lived in Sanford, Mom in Miami. He was only in Sanford because Mom sent him to Sanford because he was suspended from school for weed.”
Momma sent Trayvon to live with Dad and his new wife at age 4. He lived with Dad, and was raised by Dad’s ex wife (or to be ex wife as there is no divorce), until Dad moved out a few months before the incident and started living with a new woman in Sanford. Trayvon then went back to live with his mother.
When Trayvon was suspended from school, for the third time this school year, Momma kicked him back to his father Tracy. The night Trayvon was shot, Tracy was out on the town with his squeeze (fiancé) so he wasn’t watching over Trayvon. Perhaps Tracy Martin should be tried for child abuse.
As to the happy family:
1) Where has Tracy’s ex (second wife) or soon to be ex been given that she is the one who really raised Trayvon? She has been completely absent from the scene.
2) Where is the new woman (fiancé?) in Tracy’s life. She must either be gone or extremely understanding given that Tracy has been running around the country with Trayvon’s mom (his first wife) for a year and has been sitting at the trial with her every day.
3) Are Tracy and Sabrina back together? If not, where is Tracy living?
4) Is Sabrina Fulton (Trayvon’s mom) going to have to go back to work now for the local government in Miami? It seems as though she’s been on family leave from her government job for over a year while she’s been giving speeches around the world about her son. Does bereavement leave last indefinitely?
Somehow I don’t expect the press to tell us. They prefer to leave us with the impression that Trayvon’s Mom and Dad are intact couple and will be going back together to Miami to grieve.
We have a term for when someone's "right to life" is violated. It's called "murder." We just had a "murder trial" whereby Zimmerman was found "not guilty." The Fifth Amendment of a little document called The Constitution of the United States explicitly prohibits individuals from being tried twice from the same crime. We don't lay aside Constitutional protections just because a bunch of idiots decide to sign a petition.
I swear, it's like the left isn't even trying to pretend that it's keeping up anymore.
An element of a civil rights prosecution is that the deprivation is caused by an actor who is taking state action under color of authority; i.e., police officers. It has been used against other than law enforcement officers but must always involve some sort of state action. The DOJ may be considering just ignoring the state action requirement and hope the case is heard by a liberal judge who doesn’t care what the law is, or maybe trying to argue that Block Watch is the functional equivalent of a police department. The latter would probably put an end to Block Watch programs altogether. It would depend on how close the local program is tied to the local police department, such as using police facilities for meetings or any nexus that would connect them. Legally, it’s more than thin, but since we no longer enjoy the rule of law, the politics could prevail.
I understood it that he was staying with his dad’s girlfriend. Bottom line is he was not walking “home”. He’d been kicked out of his “home”. And he didn’t live with his mother that much anyway. He was with his stepmother more than anyone. She wasn’t in court. They wanted to portray them as one big happy family of four.
Don’t be distracted. The Federal government is going to use sleight of hand, to keep our attention focussed on riots and demonstrations like the ones in Oakland, San Francisco and elsewhere, to try and give Boehner and Cantor breathing room to force amnesty for illegal aliens down our throats. DON’T LET THEM DO THIS!!
