I am trying to summarize this travesty to share with several Black or African-American friends who probably agree that Zimmerman deserved to be acquitted, but will be under severe pressure from other members of their communities. Any comments or suggestions? I am also posting this on the Legal Insurrection thread.

Some complain of the verdict in the Zimmerman trial, demand that Zimmerman be punished, and chant “NO Justus - No Peace”

Justice has been done, but more justice is needed.

In this county and culture, Criminal Justice requires due process, not a lynching.

Due Process is “that process that is due”

In most states, the evidence of major crimes, such as murder/manslaughter are presented to a grand jury.

The citizen grand jury, guided by the prosecutor, decides whether or not to charge (indict) the defendant and the appropriate charges. The grand jury can also decide that a crime was not committed or that this defendant did not commit the crime under investigation and issue a “no bill”

The case against Zimmerman was never presented to a grand jury. The local prosecutor was satisfied that Zimmerman did not commit a crime. That is part of what led to the initial public dissatisfaction with the handling of the case.

Once the family and their advisors mounted a successful public relations campaign, the Florida Governor yielded to public pressure, and appointed a special prosecutor. A special prosecutor should examine the evidence and how the investigation was handled and determine if the local police and prosecutor handled the case correctly (i.e., make sure the locals were not just taking care of one of their friends). If warranted, in most states, the special prosecutor would present the facts to a grand jury.

The special prosecutor in this matter did not present the case to grand jury but, as allowed by Florida law, issued an “information” which commenced the criminal case against Zimmerman.

That failure to present the case to a grand jury led to the deprivation of civil rights of George Zimmerman, and this travesty that we witnessed.

If the matter had been presented to a grand jury, and the grand jury issued a no bill, the BGI would have demonstrated for a review of the matter by the US Department of Justice, claiming that Martin's civil rights (to live) had been violated. Unless the system has been totally corrupted, that investigation would disclose the evidence that was not presented in this trial and Zimmerman should have been exonerated. Zimmerman's civil rights have been violated.

If we still have a justice system, Zimmerman should commence suits for the violations of his civil rights against the special prosecutor and the prosecutors; against the “scheme team” (the parents, their attorneys and advisors - including the BGI - Sheraton, Jackson et al.) and agains the media that knowingly and maliciously misrepresented facts and defamed Zimmerman in their reports.

Thanks cousins!

It’s good. If I were specifically addressing black folks, I would expand a bit on the lynching angle. The same mindset that motivated white lynchers is alive, well and dominant in today’s media culture.

They got everything they asked for — an arrest, an indictment, an investigation [which should have been first], a trial in a kangaroo court with trumped up evidence, where the defendant was denied the evidence to prove his innocence, where his underfunded legal team had to defend him with one hand tied behind their backs — and they still didn’t get the verdict.

That’s what they are mad at. They cheated and still lost.

It’s time for political correctness in this matter to end.
