WASHINGTON - The D.C. Council has passed a bill that would require large retailers like Wal-Mart to pay workers at least $12.50.

The bill now goes to Mayor Vincent Gray for his consideration. The 8-5 vote was short of the votes needed to override a veto from the mayor

Minimum wage needs to be $30 hr. Otherwise, you’re better off being on welfare.

Has Walmart lost its mind? Why expose your company to the whacky WDC population?

make minimum wage 100,000 per hour and then everyone could only work one hour a year at McDonalds and we would all be rich!

I’m fairly sure if it passes the law could be struck down in court. Equal protection under the law and all that. (Seems the bill only pertains to a certain size business and we aren’t talking bennies we are talking basic wage)

The DC city council has been drinking too much of this:

This is a manifestation of one of the consequences of too many and too good government assistance programs. This is the city council’s action, but it reflects that it is better not to work at all than to accept a minimum wage. Those who work will pay more for this largesse.

I actually agree. They will need too many security guards and the place will need a substation that runs a shuttle to the local lock-up. If the Mayor doesn’t sign it, there is no guarantee that the next one won’t. Remember, this is a city that pretty allowed the teachers union to elect this mayor. They are run by the few unions left and the strongest (most influential) is the teachers union.
There must have been some pretty strong assurances in those meetings in Bentonville for WM to make this commitment.

The goofy thing is that Walmart had announced they planned to pay an average of $12.39/hour. But the DC bureaucrats had to stick the knife in over 11 cents. Only people they hurt are their constituents.

I was referring to this study.

When broken down per hour, welfare spending per hour per household in poverty is $30.60, which is higher than the $25.03 median income per hour.

Nope. You got that wrong. There's a BIG difference between an average of $12.39 an hour and a minimum of 12.50 an hour. New employees with no experience would be starting at minimum wage, while managers could be making up into the teens and even 20's or more an hour, and the average could be 12.39 an hour. Making the minimum 12.50 an hour would mean that either they would not hire inexperienced workers or would have to pay them 12.50, and the overall average rate would probably be upwards of 15 or 18 or even 20 an hour. A merchandising store cannot survive with average rates like that.

$8.25 an hour which is $1.00 more than the Federal minimum wage. Go figure. I can guarantee you that should Walmart ever go union, all criticism of them would immediately cease and they would become the most wonderful company ever.

Doesn’t matter whatever it is it is 900 less jobs and counting as no large retailer will build where they are not allowed to compete fairly for business.
