It's sounding more like the pilot had some really strong winds to deal with upon landing or had trouble controling the plane upon landing.

I agree. No way he could not see the landing zone. He was either distracted, I.L.S. was out and there was a fog condition I have not heard of yet.

I am not sure but correct me if I am wrong but I think GE now has the exclusive to build those engines for the 777 now.
When the 777 was first developed and built it was P&W.

See the picture at post 220.
He brought it in too low and tried to correct but it was too late. In the picture you can see the tail section hitting or about to hit the rock berm.
The weather was perfect. No wind problems.
