My refrigerator is my highest user of electricity. The whole point of being in a First World Country is to be able to store food safely.

When the power goes out the prime needs are to run either the furnace or the refrigerator along with some minor lighting at night.

I'd rather have a switch where I could cut off power for the government.

Bingo! on that.

I have a small generator for running exactly those items in generally that priority. We had a windstorm 2 weeks ago and were without utility power for 35 hours, it came in really handy.
