EGYPT'S army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has ousted president Mohamed Morsi and declared the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court caretaker leader.
Mr Sisi, the defence minister in Mr Morsi's government, also announced a freezing of the Islamist-drafted constitution and early presidential elections.
He said a "strong and capable" government would be formed and would have "full capacities".
The army chief said a panel would be formed to look into amendments to the constitution and a law would be drafted to regulate parliamentary elections.
After the announcement, delivered by Mr Sisi in a televised address, Mr Morsi denounced the move as an "illegal" and urged Egyptians to "peacefully resist the coup as he himself will do", a senior aide told AFP.
Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei said the roadmap announced by Mr Sisi "meets the the people's demands for early presidential elections".
The army's dramatic move comes after millions of Egyptians took to the streets to call for his ouster, accusing him of betraying the 2011 revolution that brought him to power.

Don’t know when, dont’ know how, but America WILL see the error of its ways. NEVER SAY NEVER! The Egyptians aren’t the only smart ones in the bunch. When America finds its footing, changes WILL be made. May God bless America!
Where’s the Simpson graphic of Ha!Ha!?
Isn't great to dream?
That's what cowards do. But give them enough numbers, and they will try to impose Sharia.
Yup, our national culture has turn to crap. Just look how many have turned out in Egypt to protest. We sit back and watch the Kardashians for the umpteenth season. We've lost our way...
Erdogan has to be thinking this one over and wondering if he stepped on his own Johnson
I usually don’t engage in bs, rurgan. When was the last time you participated in something of that kind?
I have been intrigued by this Egyptian story.
For it was right here on FreeRepublic that so many lambasting the Egyptian brotherhood were quite vocal.
Well hey, Egypt is new to democracy. Unlike so many other Muslim type countries, this is not a state that makes its money from oil. Egypt has (or HAD) a thriving tourist industry and for that you need....eh...tourists.
I must suppose they thought electing a Muslim Brotherhood guy was a good idea at the time.
Hey, they’re new at this. I don’t care about Allah and that oppressive religion used to control people with not much to do with a loving God. People want to be free and this Morsi and his murderous minions were murdering people and destroying the Egyptian economy.
The people had enough; there’s no Muslim law that says you must sit back and let your children be murdered if they don’t go along.
AND, I might add, they had an army on their side.
I think it’s entirely possible we might one day see that same scene from Egypt right here in America.
Cause we all have a point. I think the people across this fruited plain will, liberals and conservatives, rise up in much the same way if congress crams this immigration plan down our throat.
Yes, I think there will come a point when television screens around the planet will be filled with scenes of millions of Americans taking to the streets, demanding borders be closed because by then, for sure, we will all realize that the political class wants to fool us, for sure after they crammed Obamacare down our throats.
And whose side do you think our army will be on?
Let me guess: this military doesn’t celebrate homosexuality or otherwise conduct social experiments with their soldiers.
