Unfortunately, that is not true. If you lie to a federal officer during an interview, even when you are not under oath, you can go to jail. Just ask Martha Stewart and Scooter Libby. According to Wikipedia, Libby was acquitted of the charge of giving false statements to the FBI.
Libby was convicted of giving false testimony to a grand jury, where he would have been sworn under oath.

Okay. And that changes the truth of my thesis statement in what way? He was charged with lying the FBI, even if he wasn’t convicted of it. So my statement still stands unimpeached - you don’t have to be under oath for you to go to jail for lying to a Federal agent.
