I've come to the conclusion that humans thrive best under adversity and tough conditions, however when they live in times of comfort and relative ease like we have today, the lack of stimulation causes their brains slow down and we get things like memorials to honor fallen bumble bees

I agree with that. Look at much of the under 30 crowd and the addiction to zombie texting in public and the inability to communicate verbally. Would this crew aided in the efforts to win WW2? Doubtful.
