It's humiliating (for him) to know that others had figured it out years before him. The best that Rush could do is pull an "Operation Chaos". It was a waste of time and political energy. Sure, it poked Hillary and Obama in the eye, but in the end it did nothing for the conservative cause except paint us as disruptive pranksters. Conservatism shouldn't be defined as disruption.

IMO the schtick is how he overcomes the crushing feeling of defeat.
