A teenage friend of Trayvon Martin was forced to admit today in the George Zimmerman murder trial that she did not write a letter that was sent to Martin's mother describing what she allegedly heard on a phone call with Martin moments before he was shot.
In a painfully embarassing moment, Rachel Jeantel was asked to read the letter out loud in court.
"Are you able to read that at all?" defense attorney Don West asked.
Jeantel, head bowed, eyes averted whispered into the court microphone, "Some but not all. I don't read cursive."
It sent a hush through the packed courtroom.
Jeantel, 19, was unable to read any of the letter save for her name...
During nearly two hours of cross examination Wednesday in which he tried to raise questions about her version of events and accused her of telling several lies under oath, including about her whereabouts during Martin's wake.
"Under oath, you created a lie and said you went to the hospital?" asked West.
"Yes," responded Jeantel. She said she lied because she didn't want to see the body.
Jeantel became increasingly agitated and scoffed when West told her that she would have to continue testifying.
She is seen as a critical witness to the prosecution because she is the only person able to say that Martin claimed that he noticed a strange man following him and that he was scared. Jeantel said Martin described the stranger as a "creepy ass cracker."
Jeantel said Martin, 17, was walking home during halftime of the NBA All-Star Game when he became unnerved because he was being followed.

This is painful. This witness knows almost nothing. Most of it innuendo, what’s she was told to say, or her own conclusions.
“Since she tweets I suppose she can read.”
Reading ans writing at a literate level or just the teeneager level of writing, “I b luvin u. brb.”?
I’ve still got that album and an energy dome around here somewhere.
Until last year, I always thought that was a flower pot on Devo’s heads.
Otherwise known as perjury. Charge her!
“Illiterate. In this day and age, really?”
The dumbing down of American kids has been equal opportunity for decades.
It is often done under the guise of new math, new English or new whatever.
A younger relative in his 40’s got hit by the new math in mid school and high school. He got bored with hs, dropped out and took his GEDs and finished in months. He got a job as a pizza delivery guy was getting short changed by the customers because he couldn’t do basic math. His dad gave him a pocket calculator and the short changing stopped in a week. After a couple of months he didn’t need the calculator and could reverse an attempted short changing. His past and present jobs require math all day, and he is excellent.
Flash forward a few decades and this young man’s nephew was labeled a math idiot/dummy. It turned out that by his 4th grade, he had 3 new maths. One of his so called new math teacher was a teacher for his older sister. His older sister told all of us how often in the morning, that teacher would be in her class room sobbing because she had to present another new math lesson. His sister would explain to the teacher how to present the stuff. When asked how she could do it, the young lady said she was solid in math, the old math, and figured out how to present the phony baloney new math. She recently got an award for being one of the top math students in that middle school.
The parents of the young ‘math dummy’ got him enrolled in Kumon, After School Self-learning Program for Kids | Kumon Math ...

Within a couple of months of Kumon, he went from math dummy to acing math tests up to 2 grades higher than his level. He has been in the annual math Olympics since then.
No excuse for the lying ugly witch in this trial. However, she and other young Americans across our land are being dumbed down each day in school.
Almost every third word is “Sir”, delivered with a sneer.
Her handlers told her to say “Sir” and she’s doing it to the hilt. She has no idea how contrived this sounds.
This is an awful witness.
Not long enough.
This “sir” stuff after every answer is annoying. If she were a Marine, I could understand saying “Yes sir”. It would be a respectful “Yes sir”.
Since the Prosecution probably told her to answer that way (she can talk loud when she wants to), this is being done to fan the flames that the Agitator-in-Chief desires.
“Why,In Gods name, does *she* need a criminal defense lawyer????? Whats going on here???”
She perjured herself before and during the trial. Hopefully the NAACP and rat party have some deep pockets to pay for her big time lawyers.
This is her screen test for Jerry Springer, where she will undoubtedly appear.
Yep, an MTV reality show just waiting to happen.
This has weird overtones of the whole CBS “fake but accurate” Pres. Bush National Guard proportional font memos. Now we have a handwritten document a witness “wrote”, but can’t read because the writing is cursive.
Sounds like a rookie mistake by the prosecution. Virtually no one under 30 has learned cursive writing. The memo might as well be in italian for all this “witless for the prosecution” knows.
“A teenage friend of Trayvon Martin was forced to admit today...”
Jaentel sure is a big girl to be a friend of little 12 yr old Trayvon.
Does Shep not get this? This girl is testifying on screen while Shep has a picture of Trayvon alongside when he wasn’t in puberty yet.
Maybe Jaentel and Trayvon both like Skittles.
That’s a good question. The defense should see if she can read a typed version of ‘her’ letter.
“Illiterate. In this day and age, really?”
...and back in the early 1980s we conservatives used to joke that half our high school graduates couldn’t read their diplomas - It look like 30 years later it’s no longer a joke.
She is painful, and it’s overkill on her part. I can hear the “seething” in her voice when she says that.
I’m not a lawyer, but, why hasn’t anyone stopped her with the “sir” stuff? (either attorney ask the judge to instruct the witness not to say sir)
This TV and “PC” stuff changes the trial, and not for the better or for “Justice”.
Create a fake account using a name of your choice.....
Not being aware of all the facts surrounding this poor creature I ask a naïve question: If she can’t read her letter how could she write it?
That's certainly a plausible explanation.
